BAYLISS AND DORR HELP TRINITY BASEBALL
GIVE TUFTS FIRST DIVISION LOSS
Medford, Mass. - Junior right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) fired a three-hitter and junior 3B Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh inning, as the visiting Trinity College Bantams posted a 2-1 victory over Tufts University in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball action this afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 6 in New England, improves to 19-8 overall and 8-2 in the NESCAC East, while Tufts, ranked No. 3 in New England, drops to 15-7-1 overall and 5-1 in the division.
The game was delayed 45 minutes after the fifth inning due to lightning flashes in the area with Tufts leading 1-0. After Bayliss had retired the first nine Jumbo batters in order, junior CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, Oregon) led off the bottom of the fourth with an infield single, and scored on a fielder's choice.
Trinity evened the score in the top of the sixth right after the delay. Freshman catcher Andrew Fries (Dublin, Ohio), who was 4-for-5 in the game, singled to lead off the inning, and junior 1B Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, CT) followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt put the runners on second and third, freshman 2B Jeff Natale (Hamden, Conn.) blooped a single over third base to score Fries.
Dorr's fourth homerun of the year to left in the seventh gave Trinity a 2-1 lead that Bayliss had no trouble holding. He recorded five 1-2-3 innings while earning his fifth win of the season. He issued a two-out walk in the eighth and a one-out single to Callahan in the ninth, but both times recorded strike outs to get the necessary outs. He finished with 10 Ks.
