TRINITY BASEBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER AT TUFTS

Piantek Sets New Season RBI Record With Homer

Medford, Mass.- Freshman catcher Bob Kenny (Milford, Mass.) hit a two-run single through the left side in the bottom of the sixth to make the difference in game one, and the Jumbos out-slugged the Bantams in game two, as Tufts University swept a key New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division double-header, 7-5, and 12-10, against Trinity College this afternoon.

With the two wins, Tufts improved to 17-7-1 overall and 7-1 in the NESCAC East to remain in first place. Trinity, which clinched a spot in the NESCAC playoffs in a 2-1 win over Tufts on Friday afternoon, dropped to 8-4 in the division and 19-8 overall. It is still to be determined which team will earn the East pennant and host the NESCAC tournament to beplayed in early May, although Tufts now holds the tiebreaker.

The first game was tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, when three Tufts singles and a hit batsman gave the Jumbos a 7-4 Tufts lead. Trinity scored a run and brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but Tufts reliever Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, Mass.) struck out the final batter to earn the win.

The visiting Bantams had taken an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back home runs by freshman catcher Andrew Fries (Dublin, Ohio) and junior infielder Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) in the first. Piantek's solo shot was his 42nd RBI, setting a Trinity single-season record. With Trinity leading 4-2 after four innings, Tufts tied the score in their fifth on a solo home run by Greg Hickey (Medway, Mass.) and a run-scoring single by junior outfielder Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, MD.

Trinity junior 3B Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) and Shapiro also homered in the game, which featured five long balls. Shapiro and Tufts starter Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, N.).combined to strike out 11 Trinity batters in the game. Fries and Dorr were both 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI for Trinity. Ayres, Hickey and Kenny were 2 for 3 for the Jumbos.

Ahead 6-4 entering the bottom of the fourth in game two, Trinity committed three errors to hand the Jumbos five runs and a 9-6 lead. The Bantams scored three runs in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 10-9, as senior co-captain SS Andy Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.) led off with a home run, senior Nick Callini (Westfield, Mass.) had a run-scoring, pinch-hit double, and Dorr added an RBI single.

Hickey gave Tufts some breathing room with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to put the lead at 12-9. Trinity senior Tom Osuch (Fairhaven, Mass.) singled and scored in the eighth, and the Bantams again brought the tying run to the plate in the last inning. Shapiro again, on in relief, retired the last two hitters to save the win. Freimuth went 3-for-5 with two runs and six RBIs for Trinity, while Dorr added three hits. Sophomore Dave Frew (Shrewbury, Mass.) earned the win in relief for the Jumbos.
