Submission of Fine & Performing Arts Material

Students with especially strong backgrounds and interests in the arts are welcome to submit materials in support of their application for admission to Trinity. In such cases, we often ask members of our Arts Faculty to participate in the evaluation of submitted materials. If you wish to submit samples of your artistic efforts for this consideration, we ask that you adhere to the following guidelines:

All materials must be received by November 15 for Early Decision 1 applicants; January 1 for Early Decision 2 and Regular Decision applicants.

Please label all submissions with your name and address.   Please mail all materials to Trinity College Admissions, 300 Summit Street, Hartford, CT, 06106.

** Please note that submissions will NOT be returned. **

Dance

1) Send a videotape (VHS) or DVD, no more than ten minutes in length that demonstrates your technical ability and includes a brief performance. If you are a CHOREOGRAPHER, please include one of your pieces on the tape.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are including selections from group pieces, please identify yourself clearly because it may be difficult to recognize you from a distance, even if a close-up of you is provided on the videotape. Therefore, you may include with the tape a description of your costume or perhaps where you enter and exit.

2) Please submit a one page essay discussing why you have chosen to participate in dance; what the form means to you; and whether you hope to continue dance at the College level and why.

Creative Writing

1) Prepare a collection (5-7 pieces) of your creative writing (poems, short stories, and/or plays, etc.).

2) Please include a brief statement describing your interest in creative writing.

Instrumental Music

1) Audio cassettes and/or CDs will be considered (please no video tapes), 10-15 minutes maximum duration. Please do NOT send tapes of you playing with a larger group, UNLESS you are clearly featured as soloist.

Label the cassette and/or CDs clearly with your name, instrument(s), and the titles and composers of the compositions you include.

2) Please submit a brief résumé of your instrumental study and performance experience, along with a short statement about the kind of instrumental music activities you hope to engage in while at Trinity.

Studio Arts

For those seriously considering significant coursework in the Studio Arts,

1) Send 20 slides in a standard vinyl presentation sheet. Do not send DVDs, CD-ROMs or videos unless it is the medium through which your art is created.

Label the slides with your name and date, as well as the title, medium and dimensions of the work (height x width). The same information should appear on a separate list.

2) Please submit a brief statement about your art (describing the content of your work, your intent, and the historical and/or contemporary foundations for your ideas), and also tell us why you are interested in studying studio art in a liberal arts setting.

Theater

1) Send a videotape, VHS format, of two contrasting contemporary monologues, 5 minutes maximum duration.

2) Please submit a one page essay discussing why you have chosen to participate in performing arts activities; what the art form means to you; and whether you hope to continue the arts activities at the College level and why.

Voice - Classical and Musical Theater

1) Send a cassette or CD of Classical and/or Musical Theater material, 10-15 minute four-song program with piano accompaniment that displays your stylistic and vocal range.

Clearly list all material by title and composer, preferably on both a separate sheet as well as on the tape/CD itself. If the selection is from a musical or opera, include the name of that work.

2) Please submit a brief résumé of your vocal study and/or performance experience.

3) If you wish to submit a videotape in addition to your vocal cassette or CD, excerpt the part or parts that feature you (again, 10-15 minute maximum), and clearly identify yourself on the tape as well as clearly identifying the material. But submit a videotape ONLY if you ALSO submit a CD or cassette.

IMPORTANT NOTES: Please do NOT submit cassettes or CDs of your a cappella or choral group, no matter how large or featured a solo you may have. Submit ONLY solo cassettes/CDs with piano accompaniment.

Please do NOT submit material that you have composed yourself unless you want it considered as composition; it will NOT be considered as part of a vocal submission. Do NOT include pop material UNLESS you have composed it yourself and want it considered specifically as composition, as described above.
