Background:
Gregory began his professional career in 1958 following a stint

debut at the Playboy Club in Chicago in 1961. Inspired by the work of
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he marched and fasted for many causes,
including opposition to the Vietnam War, world hunger, and drug abuse.
Gregory even threw his hat into the ring politically, opposing Richard
J. Daley in Chicago's 1966 mayoral election and running for president
of the U. S. in 1968 as a write-in candidate for the Freedom and Peace
Party.
After the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr., John F.
Kennedy, and Robert Kennedy, Gregory became absorbed with untangling
political conspiracies, writing books such as "Code Name Zorro:
The Murder of Martin Luther King Jr.' (1971) with conspiracy theorist
Mark Lane. More recently he protested at CIA headquarters in response
to allegations that the CIA supplied cocaine to predominantly African
American neighborhoods in Los Angeles. In 1996, he returned to the
stage in his critically acclaimed one-man show, Dick Gregory Live!
