Yahoo!

Yahoo! is a searchable index. It is run by humans who actually look at the pages included on their site. It is also one of the oldest and most popular sites for searching. Every site listed gets a one or two line description, which makes searching easier. For example, their "Yahoo:Humanities:Philosophy:" selection holds thousands of Philosophy resources.

AltaVista

AltaVista is the largest and by far the fastest search site -- their keyword database contains the most words on the WWW. However, they do not offer a synoposis of the findings; instead they give you the first few lines of text on the page. You can also do very complex searches there to narrow down your findings.

AltaVista UseNet Search

The Web is not the only source for information; philosophical debate is alive and going on now -- on the Usenet. Usenet is the part of the internet that acts as a massive bulletin board, containing over 10,000 different groups for discussing anything. This form searches AltaVista.

DejaNews UseNet Search

DejaNews has a complete history of almost all newsgroups. Searching here can yield some interesting info. Specify 'philosophy' in your search query, ie: "philosophy, 'your search string'"

You can also browse indexed lists of the Usenet news groups maintained on the Internet.

Mailing Lists

People on the Internet have also set of Mailing Lists, also called "ListServers". A listserv is a group of people who talk about a particular issue or thing over E-mail. When one person sends a message, it reaches all the others on the list, and then anyone can respond.
