Dear Friends of the Barbieri Endowment,
The Barbieri Endowment for Italian Culture is delighted to invite you to a symposium Celebrating the Life and Work of Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) to be held on Saturday, October 9, 2004 at Trinity College, Hartford, beginning at 10 am.
Petrarch (as he is known in the English speaking world) was the most renowned intellectual of his day. A poet and a scholar of ancient Roman culture, he was a forerunner of Humanism, the philosophical, linguistic, and historical movement that ushered in the Renaissance. For nearly three centuries after his death, poets throughout Europe modeled their own love poetry on Petrarch’s Canzoniere. His ideas about language, history, and individual identity are still quite relevant to today’s world. We are very pleased, therefore, that the following scholars will offer their fresh perspectives about different aspects of the life and oeuvre of Francesco Petrarca.
Roberta Antognini (Vassar College): "The Autobiographical Pact of the Familiarium Rerum Liber" (10:15-11:00)
Roberta Capelli (Univ. of Padova): “Petrarch, Agent of Change in the Renaissance Provençale” (11-11:45)
Michele Mulchahey (St. Andrews University, Scotland): "Spiritual Mimesis, the Friars, and Lay Devotion in Petrarch's Italy" (11:45-12:30)
Mikael Hornqvist (Uppsala University, Sweden): "Petrarch and the History of Political Thought" (1:30-2:15)
H. Wayne Storey (Indiana University): The Canzoniere: Doubting Petrarch's Last Words. (2:15-3:00)
Reception (3:00-4:00)
The symposium will be held in Rittenberg Lounge (Mather Hall, Trinity College). As with all Barbieri Events, the symposium is free and open to the public. Please contact Ms. Sandra Andrews (860-297-2562) if you would like further details.
On behalf of the Barbieri Endowment, we look forward to seeing you at the symposium.
