Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford SPRING, SUMMER Youth service organization whose goal is to provide every child with the essential tools needed for a successful and bright future. Intern needed as assistant to Unit Director of the Club. Intern will assist in conducting programs, supervising and evaluating children, and conducting daily age-appropriate activities. Junior Achievement of SW New England  FALL, SPRING. Educational organization that encourages young people to value free enterprise, business and economics to improve the quality of their lives. This is done by volunteer led classes combined with hands-on materials, based on the grade-appropriate K - 12 curriculum provided by Junior Achievement. Interns are needed to facilitate classes, in conjunction with the classroom teacher. All materials and training will be provided, and interns can choose the grade-level they would like to teach. Classes can be run in a variety of towns, with a strong focus on Kennelly School on White Street in Hartford. Vision Academic Mentoring Program (V.A.M.P.) FALL, SPRING. Academic mentoring program for at-risk students.  V.A.M.P. is located at the Learning Corridor on Broad Street. Intern will assist Program Coordinator in working with mentors and mentees, including fielding questions, enforcing rules, distribution and collection of paperwork, filling in for absent mentors or program assistants, and assisting with special events. Governor's Prevention Partnership SUMMER. Intern needed to conduct, compile and summarize results of a prevalence survey to determine  number of children being served in mentoring programs in various urban communities, assist with resource mapping/assessment of communities, assist with organizing activities and plans for fall mentor recruitment events. 10 hours/week commitment. Hartford AmeriCorps/Our Piece of the Pie (Parent Agency) SPRING, SUMMER, FALL. Greater Hartford Community of Promise (at the WorkBank, Inc.) SPRING, FALL. Local chapter of America's Promise, the alliance for youth founded by Colin Powell. Mission is to mobilize people from every sector of American life to build the character/competence of our nation's youth through access to caring adults, access to a safe place with structured programs, a healthy start, opportunities to learn marketable skills and how to give back to the community. Intern will work in Youth After School program, Monday - Thursday, 2:30-4:45. Will help tutor/mentor children ages 6-16. COMPASS Youth Collaborative, After School Initiative FALL, SPRING.  After-school program at Bellizzi Middle School. Two positions available: Group Leader - to design/implement curriculum, recruit/retain student participants, mentor students in grades 6-8,develop plan for re-engaging children who withdraw from program, establish relationships with parents, teachers and school administrators. Work with teachers to provide quality instruction/guidance, diffuse conflicts/volatile situations, and other duties as assigned. Tutor - provide tutoring in science, math, English and social studies. Everybody Wins! CT  FALL, SPRING, SUMMER. An independent affiliate of a national organization. One of their projects, Readers as Leaders, involves 110 middle schoolers from 3 inner city schools, as tutors/readers and role models for kindergarteners. The older children receive leadership training, including a retreat at Camp Jewell, and literacy training to learn how to present books to young children. Each middle schooler is matched one-on-one to a kindergartener, which helps build literacy and demonstrates good role modeling. Intern needed to facilitate the reading sessions, facilitate debriefing sessions, help prepare for the team-building retreat and for special events, to help secure funding by helping students testify at the Capitol and speak with legislators. Nurturing Family Program (Catholic Charities) FALL, SPRING, SUMMER. Serving primarily families in Hartford, agency supports/educates first-time parents in order to prevent child abuse and to foster healthy family development. Intern will recruit participants and co-facilitate parenting groups on issues such as child development, discipline, safety. Will assist in assessing family needs and home visits. The Cove Center for Grieving Children SUMMER, FALL, SPRING. Established in 1995, its mission is to offer support services to children/families who have lost a loved one to death. Also offers training to professionals and organizations who work with kids. Central office is in Meriden, with 8 support group sites throughout the state. Interns needed in the following areas: Non-profit business management and Fund Development & Marketing/Fundraising: attend meetings, design/administer/coordinate programs, other duties as needed; Counseling - with staff supervision (fall and spring only): participate in running/facilitating support groups. Community Partners in Action SUMMER. Internships available in the following areas, under the umbrella of the Young Offender Program. Court Liaison: attend court sessions, interview clients, research information, and other related duties; School Liaison: advise/support clients in  educational activities, attend school meetings, maintain contact and get updates from school personnel, and other duties; Case Manager: meet with clients, conduct self-help workshops, prepare progress reports, conduct orientation for new clients, and other duties; Client Monitor: update curfew log on weekly basis, place calls to homes of clients after 8 p.m. curfew. Accompany staff on visits to clients' homes, monitor clients' attendance at weekly mandatory workshops, and other duties; Education Workshop Facilitator: gather educational materials to be used in packets for clients' use, develop method of assessing reading, math and other skills, conduct workshops for out-of-school clients; Employment Assistant: help recruit and train out-of-school youth to participate in the employment assistance program; assist in-school clients with obtaining and maintaining employment, and other duties. Capital Workforce Partners SPRING. CWP is a private, non-profit corporation that addresses the preparedness of youth to enter the workforce. Intern will conduct research re funding opportunities for workforce development programs/activities, focusing on private and corporate sources, and for occupational training services, focusing on programs that address occupations identified as "in demand" in North Central CT. Hartford Food System SPRING, SUMMER. Mission of organization is to ensure that all CT residents have access to nutritious, affordable foods. "Grow Hartford" program promotes sustainable and equitable food system in Hartford by cultivating youth leadership and civic participation through agriculture. Two opportunities: Education and Agriculture Intern: Teach and supervise youth. Experience working with at-risk youth desirable. Must demonstrate desire to learn, enjoy physical work and not be afraid to get dirty! 3-month position, 20 hrs./week. Stipend of $400 and assistance with housing. Urban Agriculture Intern: Set up special projects related to topics of interest, including composting or vermiculture, butterfly gardens or sensory gardens, seed-saving, herbs, etc. Would require 8-10 hours/week. Community Renewal Team - Youth Artisan  SPRING, SUMMER, FALL. The purpose of our program is to serve urban youth, ages 12-16, in the area of scholastic support, personal development, visual and performing arts. Goal is to cultivate appreciation for the arts, develop performance abilities, build leadership skills and encourage scholastic achievement. Field trips, community projects, exhibits and performances are used to strengthen skills and to reiterate lessons learned. Interns will teach lessons in time management, organization, budgeting and conflict resolution. Will assist with homework assignments and computer skills, will present workshop on preparing for college and will organize a tour of Trinity campus. Must show leadership in community service projects. Will supervise students during visits to local museums, theatre and art exhibits.
