Poverty & Race Research Action Council / The Sheff Movement (SPRING). The Sheff Movement is a community based coalition that is working to expand and strengthen the range of quality, integrated education programs available to Hartford families under the Sheff v. O'Neill school desegregation court decree. These programs include the "Project Choice" program, which places Hartford children in suburban schools, and a system of 15-20 Hartford based magnet schools that are open to children throughout the Hartford region. An intern is needed to assist with expanding support for the Project Choice program in the Hartford suburbs. Tasks will include helping to organize at least two suburban gatherings, identifying suburban institutions and supporters; archival research at Storrs, Trinity and the State Library; and other tasks to be determined. Connecticut Association of NonProfits (CANP) (SPRING). Statewide association which serves, strengthens and supports Connecticut's nonprofit community. CANP has an internship opportunity to assist in its Next Generation of Nonprofit Leadership Initiative. Tasks will include networking of GenerationX individuals currently employed in the nonprofit sector; researching higher education and other training programs in nonprofit leadership development, management, and Board/Governance development; supporting Executive Director in networking existing Executive Directors with a focus on those newly hired or promoted with the last four years; compiling a list of current nonprofit executives and other management staff willing to serve as adjunct faculty members or guest speakers for higher education classes and programs. Junior Achievement of SW New England  FALL, SPRING. Educational organization that encourages young people to value free enterprise, business and economics to improve the quality of their lives. This is done by volunteer led classes combined with hands-on materials, based on the grade-appropriate K - 12 curriculum provided by Junior Achievement. Interns are needed to facilitate classes, in conjunction with the classroom teacher. All materials and training will be provided, and interns can choose the grade-level they would like to teach. Classes can be run in a variety of towns, with a strong focus on Kennelly School on White Street in Hartford. Sankofa Kuumba Cultural Arts Consortium SUMMER, FALL, SPRING. Non-profit organization whose mission is to research/teach traditional and other Black African diaspora art forms (such as dance, music, drumming) through reading, storytelling, story writing and dance. develop the arts in after-school programs in Hartford public school system. Prefer visual or performing art, education or business -oriented majors, but anyone may apply. Intern can choose area in which to work: research: researching other non-profits and grants, data from schools; teacher assistant: various duties during after-school sessions (handing out snacks, teaching, taking attendance); administration: update performance calendar, assist with event/presentation planning; dance: learn and teach traditional dance forms. COMPASS Youth Collaborative, After School Initiative FALL, SPRING.  After-school program at Bellizzi Middle School. Two positions available: Group Leader - to design/implement curriculum, recruit/retain student participants, mentor students in grades 6-8,develop plan for re-engaging children who withdraw from program, establish relationships with parents, teachers and school administrators. Work with teachers to provide quality instruction/guidance, diffuse conflicts/volatile situations, and other duties as assigned. Tutor - provide tutoring in science, math, English and social studies. Everybody Wins! CT  FALL, SPRING, SUMMER. An independent affiliate of a national organization. One of their projects, Readers as Leaders, involves 110 middle schoolers from 3 inner city schools, as tutors/readers and role models for kindergarteners. The older children receive leadership training, including a retreat at Camp Jewell, and literacy training to learn how to present books to young children. Each middle schooler is matched one-on-one to a kindergartener, which helps build literacy and demonstrates good role modeling. Intern needed to facilitate the reading sessions, facilitate debriefing sessions, help prepare for the team-building retreat and for special events, to help secure funding by helping students testify at the Capitol and speak with legislators. Community Partners in Action - Young Offender Program SPRING. 6 positions suitable for internships: Court Liaison - appear in Hartford Superior Court to accept clients into program; bring progress reports to court ; interview/screen, gather info on prospective clients. School Liaison - advise/support clients with educational activities; attend school meetings; obtain weekly updates on client attendance/academic performance; other duties as required.  Case Manager - open/update client files; conduct orientation session for new clients; meet regularly with clients, providing guidance, support; prepare progress reports; close files on discharged clients. Client Monitor - update curfew log; regularly place phone calls to clients' homes after 8 p.m. curfew; monitor each client's attendance at weekly mandatory workshops. Hartford Food System SPRING, SUMMER. Mission of organization is to ensure that all CT residents have access to nutritious, affordable foods. "Grow Hartford" program promotes sustainable and equitable food system in Hartford by cultivating youth leadership and civic participation through agriculture. Two opportunities: Education and Agriculture Intern: Teach and supervise youth. Experience working with at-risk youth desirable. Community Renewal Team - Youth Artisan  SPRING, SUMMER, FALL. The purpose of our program is to serve urban youth, ages 12-16, in the area of scholastic support, personal development, visual and performing arts. Goal is to cultivate appreciation for the arts, develop performance abilities, build leadership skills and encourage scholastic achievement. Field trips, community projects, exhibits and performances are used to strengthen skills and to reiterate lessons learned. Interns will teach lessons in time management, organization, budgeting and conflict resolution. Will assist with homework assignments and computer skills, will present workshop on preparing for college and will organize a tour of Trinity campus. Must show leadership in community service projects. Will supervise students during visits to local museums, theatre and art exhibits.
