3180 HIST-451-15 Hist & Film:What is "History"? 1.00 LEC Figueroa,Luis A T:06:30PM-09:30PM
Up to the advent of the modern era, most societies preserved their historical memory, and produced historical narratives and interpretations of the past that were conveyed through oral traditions, as written texts were generally accessed only by educated elites. With the advent of the printing press and the rise of vernacular languages as the principal form of textual communication and of professional history as an academic discipline, the modern era, particularly in Western societies, witnessed the rise of printed historical scholarship as the principal medium for accessing historical memory and historical interpretation. However, the twentieth century, especially in its second half, saw the emergence of new forms of communication through cinema and telecommunication technologies that produced a myriad of "texts" that came to be the primary form through which large segments, if not the majority, of peoples the world over gained knowledge about the past. From D.W. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation," to Ken Burns' "The Civil War," millions of Americans, for example, came to see cinema as a principal form of historical knowledge-production and dissemination. This course will explore the relationship between historiography and cinema, both fiction and documentary, examining debates between historians, philosophers of history and film, and filmmakers themselves, as well as a representative sample of historical dramatic fiction and documentary films. In the process, students will explore the status of historical writing in the context of a "post-literate age" where the decoding of cinematic texts has become crucial a form of literacy.
