IMPORTANT: When studying away, students can earn different kinds of credit, depending upon the program in which they participate:

 

1) Trinity Credit:  Applies to students enrolled in Trinity courses taught or supervised by faculty with Trinity appointments, and receive grades that calculate into their GPA.  Students are enrolled in these courses by the Office of International Programs.

2) Transfer Credits that Calculate into the GPA:  Applies to students enrolled in the Trinity Global Sites listed below.  Since Global Sites offer a combination of Trinity Credit (see above) and transfer credit that calculates in the GPA, students will complete an Application for Transfer Credit for non-Trinity credit courses.

3)  Transfer Credit:  Applies to students enrolled in programs not administered by Trinity.  With appropriate prior approval, transfer credits may be used to fulfill major, minor, or distribution requirements.  To receive transfer credit, students must complete the Application for Transfer Credit form and follow the procedures outlined in the Student Handbook under the section entitled “Transfer Credit.”  Grades from transferred courses at programs not administered by Trinity do not compute into students’ Trinity GPA, but do appear as text on the Trinity transcript.

The programs listed on the following pages are approved for study away.  The list contains both Trinity- administered programs (in bold and defined above), as well as those offered by other schools and organizations.  The programs in bold are NOT subject to the study away fee. School for Field Studies: Wildlife Ecology and Management Studies, various cities

Explore innovative ways in which Kenya’s wildlife can be conserved and utilized as income source.  Identify appropriate land-use practices that enable residents to maximize production without harm to the environment.  This program is approved for various science majors and currently requires a waiver – please see the Office of International Programs for details.

TANZANIA

The course selection includes public policy and field experience, history, philosophy and letters, social sciences. Students enroll in intensive Spanish language and Argentine culture course.

BRITISH WEST INDIES

School for Field Studies, Marine Resource Studies, Turks and Caicos Islands

Students work with local residents to study and help sustain the economic, societal, and ecological stability of the South Caicos habitats and its island community.

Students explore many issues of human rights as they play out in a society that has suffered violations of human rights; community service projects with local organizations or human rights practices. Program includes a core course and internship.  Students earn two Trinity in-residence credits.  Other credits earned are transfer credit.

 

COSTA RICA

Program focuses on tropical biology and resource management studies; includes lectures, laboratories, field and class work. Students enroll in a Spanish language course and a Latin American culture course.

Students work with local residents to study and develop sustainable management models that protect the biodiversity of the ecosystems.  Research focuses on ecological and economic viability of organic agriculture.

1) Comparative Ecology and Conservation: 4 semesters college-level Spanish and prerequisite studies in environmental studies, ecology, or biology.

Program focuses on study of Ecuador’s diverse ecosystems, including the Amazonian jungle, the Andes mountains, and the Galapagos Islands.

2) Culture and Development: 3 semesters college-level Spanish.

Program focuses on study of the nongovernmental organizations and social movements and how they create democracy in an indigenous nation.

 

MEXICO

Various tracks depending on Spanish language proficiency.  Basic or intermediate Spanish-level students take four Spanish language courses. Advanced Spanish-level students enroll at Universidad Panamericana, which offers courses in engineering, law, and education. Students should carefully select courses for transfer, since some may not apply to Trinity’s curriculum.

 

School for Field Studies, Marine Mammal Conservation and Coastal Ecosystem Studies, Baja

Fall semester explores conservation strategies to protect several marine turtle populations; Spring semester focuses on applied ecology of marine mammals, specifically the gray whale population. Both programs engage local residents in projects involving habitat conservation.

 

NICARAGUA

INDIA and TIBET (Temporarily suspended)

Terms offered: fall only. Language of instruction: English. Eligibility requirements: reading seminar on Himalayan culture, history, and religion recommended; no GPA requirement. Housing: guest houses and homestays. Application deadlines: please see note below. Recommended majors: International Studies, Philosophy, Religion, History, Political Science. The program begins in Delhi, India, where students meet with the program director for a program orientation before heading to Darjeeling en route to Gangtok, Sikkim. Students attend introductory lectures and continue their orientation before moving in with local families and beginning regular classes. Students embark on a ten-day trek in the Kanchendzonga Park in rural Sikkim before heading on to Tibet. In Lhasa, students attend lectures and participate in group discussions and exercises with local Tibetans. The emphasis is on the rural-urban divide, the ideology and application of Chinese development in Tibet, and issues of gender and education . Students have the choice of studying the Nepali or Tibetan language. Visits to rural Tibet and small urban centers are included.

 

JAPAN

Both tracks include courses on government and politics, Austrian art and architecture, Viennese theater, and the European Union.

The program is designed with Philosophy majors in mind, but is appropriate for students interested in Central Europe and offers courses in many areas, including Philosophy, International Studies, Political Science, History, Women & Gender Studies, Economics, and other areas. Students study intensive German and take regular courses at the University of Vienna in English (or German). Students take a Core Course taught by Trinity Professor Erik Vogt on European and Central European Theory and have the option of doing an internship.

 

CZECH REPUBLIC
