Arthur Vining Davis Summer Institute in Urban and Global Studies
The Institute's goal is to further integrate the Trinity College emphasis on urban and global learning with our current undergraduate curriculum, to enable students to develop skills that will serve them both in the classroom and in the broader, more experiential reach of their education, to engage them practically and conceptually in the urban environment of Hartford, to link Hartford with other global urban locations, optionally to prepare them for study abroad, and to help them integrate study abroad into their overall Trinity curriculum. This program aims to encourage students from all backgrounds to participate in our urban and global initiatives and to make study abroad more equitably available to students regardless of their economic or personal background by allowing students to use summer mentored research or outreach/internship placements as preparation for their study abroad, and/or to use the stipends they earn for the summer in lieu of summer work necessary to assist in providing funds for their academic year. Each Summer Davis Fellow will receive a stipend of $3,500, plus housing at Trinity for a ten-week period. Participation includes attending weekly lectures and panel presentations organized each Tuesday, as well as one weekly group meal coordinated with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) summer program. Summer Davis Fellows may also engage collaboratively with students and faculty who have received Global Mellon Grants. Up to a total of 20 grants for Davis Fellows will be granted in 2007 and again in 2008. Students may apply either as a Davis Research Fellow or a Davis Community Fellow. Each Davis Fellow will have a faculty sponsor. Davis Community Fellows will in addition have a field supervisor. Institute Director: Professor Milla Riggio
Eligibility: All Trinity students, including international students and IDP students
Application: All questions and requests for applications should be directed to Krista Brown (x4287)
Next Deadline: Monday, March 19, 2007.

Mellon Grant for Student Global-Urban Research Projects or Internships
Students who have recently studied abroad or have been admitted to study abroad for the coming semester will be eligible to apply for funding that will significantly enhance and augment a chosen credit-bearing global-urban project or internship.  Research or internship topics may relate to the student’s major, minor, or general education interests, and preference will be given to those projects that may result in a thesis/senior exercise later in the student’s career.  Themes must be investigative and global-urban in nature.  Preference will be given to initiatives that can be shared with the campus community.  Examples are topics that concern world health, human rights, the education of women and children, indigenous cultures, ethnic rituals and festivals, famine and the environment, community expressions of art and music, etc.  Under the supervision of Trinity faculty, projects/internships can be undertaken during the summer while residing either abroad or in the U. S., or they can be pursued during a fall or spring semester away.  Awards cannot be given for projects/internships undertaken after graduation.  Students completing or preparing to study at Trinity Global Learning Sites and the Rome campus will be given preference.
Amount of Award:       $2,000 - $3,000 (projects and internships proposals can be for partial credit or 1.00 credit)
Eligibility:  Limited to Trinity College undergraduates who are full-time matriculants in good standing, and who will have completed their first year by the time of the award.
Application:  Together with a letter of support from the sponsoring faculty member, the student will e-mail or submit a written summary that details the global-urban research project or internship and a budget outline (5 copies, if submitted hard-copy) to Nancy Birch Wagner , Dean of International Programs and Graduate Studies (x2526)
Final Deadline: March 16, 2007 for proposals undertaken during summer 2007 or academic year 2007-08.

Tanaka Fund for Student Research (TFSR)
Provides grants to stimulate and facilitate student research pertaining to Asian history, cultures, and societies. The research supported by these grants, whether solely as student projects or joint student/faculty projects, is expected to relate to a student’s thesis, senior project, or other student scholarly activity such as a senior seminar or/and an independent study.
ELIGIBILITY: Students who plan to undertake research during their junior or senior year and/or the summer between these two years. Students/faculty teams for joint research to be undertaken during the same time frame as student grants. Proposals will be solicited through the Asian Studies section of the International Studies Program. The Faculty Research Committee reviews the proposals and awards the grants.
ELIGIBLE COSTS: Tanaka FSR grants are to be used to reimburse direct research expenses; they are not to pay stipends to Trinity students or faculty members. Grant money may be used for travel, local maintenance, access fees for archives and libraries, photo-reproduction of archival materials, and similar research expenses. The money may not be used for the purchase of capital equipment or other durable materials. Questions about the proper use of these funds should be directed to Professor Jeffrey Bayliss, Department of History. In keeping with other internally competitive research grants, TFSR grants are expected to be in the amount of $3,500. The number of grants awarded each year will be determined by the endowment income and the quality of the applications.
Deadline: Proposals for research to be undertaken in the summer of 2007 or during the academic year of 2007-08 should be submitted to Professor Bayliss not later than March 5, 2007.
