Newly Remodeled General Chemistry Laboratory

The General Chemistry Loboratory was remodeled for the 2002-03 Academic Year. The long bench-style work areas were replaced by work islands, giving each student more individual space while also opening the floor space for easier access to all parts of the lab. A lecture room was full AV technology was built into the laboratory to allow easier instruction for students (and professors) on the particular lab being conducted that week. This area also gives students a "chemical free" atmosphere where they may gather after the lab to share notes and work on problems without having to leave the area. Finally, an instrument room was built into the existing lab space. Separating the instrument room from the work space protects the instruments from accidental spills and other mishaps while giving a climate controlled area for there more consistant data collection purposes. The laboratory will also have wireless network access so that students may share the data they collect with the rest of the lab sections quickly and efficiently, allowing for more integration within the learning environment. The first year of courses within a chemistry/biochemistry major are very crucial and the newly improved General Chemistry Laboratory will ensure that students are given access to not only very good instruction, but also the best equipment and work areas.
