WWW.TRINCOLL.EDU Directory Layout

Status: Draft
Last revised: 8 May 2002
Author: David Chappell

This is the new layout for the web server www.trincoll.edu. This plan is still in development.

Web Server Filing Committie

The Web Server Filing Committie shall organize the layout of the Trinity College web server WWW.TRINCOLL.EDU. The Committie will not create or dictate the content of the web server, rather its members will work to make sure the content created by others is stored in a neat and logical fashion.

The Committie will create a web folder for each content creating organization or college department. The content creators will then be free to create additional subfolders to hold their content. The Committie, by designating a separate workspace for each web writing team, will prevent them from accidently interfering with one another.

Additionally, on request, the Committie will establish additional workspace folders for distict events and publications. As a result, each projects files will be kept together and will remain readily identifiable. Thus, the files may be easily removed, when the event is over and no longer a subject of interest, or when a publication is discontinued.

Directory Naming Style Guide

First and Second Level Directories

Web folders for departments, projects, events, and publications will be created in one of several pre-defined top level directories. None will itself be a top level directory. New top levels directories will be created only after a consensus is reached within the Web Server Filing Committie.

Non-Conforming Web Folder Names

Web folders whose names don't conform to the above standard will be gradually phased out. In order to do this, the folders will be moved and renamed. HTTP redirects will be established to direct browsers to the folders at their new locations.

Trinity Standard Look and Feel

The members of the Web Server Filing Committie will act as librarians for files which are components of the general look-and-feel of the Trinity College web site. Some of these files will be created or compiled by the committie to meet the stated needs of the various web writing teams. Others will be submitted by the web writing teams.

It is desirable to keep the number of look-and-feel components as small as possible. A submitted component will be accepted for inclusion only if, in the judgement of a majority of the Web Server Filing Committie, it fills a need, does not unnecessarily duplicate the function of an existing component, and is of use to more than one web writing team. If a component is not accepted for inclusion in the site-wide look-and-feel archive, then the web writing team that submitted it may continue to use it, but must keep the component in one of its private web folders.
