CONNECTING TO ACADEMIC FILE SERVERS

Accessing Zep from a WinXP Computer

At Trinity, there are several online resources that can be utilized by Students, Faculty, and Staff.  Some examples of these resources are: Tamba, TCData, and Zep.  For consistency's sake, this tutorial will show you how to access the Zep server, but other resources are accessible in the same ways.  Once connected to a particular server, you will be able to utilize that server's features (such as Docex on the Zep server).

There are two ways to access the server zep within Windows.  One is to create a mapped drive and the other is to access zep from the start menu.

To Create a Mapped Drive:

NOTE: If you are trying to access Zep from an off-campus location, you will need to create a VPN connection first:
http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/cc/documentation/comm-dialin/VPN/default.htm

1.  Open My Computer

2.  Choose Tools...Map Network Drive.  Type in the name of the folder on zep that you need to access.  (e.g. \\zep\bantam or \\zep\docex).

3.  Click on the link that says "connect using a different user name."

4.  Enter your Active Directory username (in the following format cmpcntr\username) and password (the information you use when you login to TCOnline or Outlook email).

5.  Press finish.

To disconnect a mapped drive, right click the drive in My Computer and choose Disconnect.

To Run from the Start Menu:

1.  Choose Start...Run

2.  Type \\zep or \\zep\bantam or \\zep\data depending on what you need to access.

3.  You may be asked for your user name and password (enter your username in the following format cmpcntr\username)

4.  Press enter.

Accessing Zep from a Mac running OS X

NOTE: If you are trying to access Zep from an off-campus location, you will need to create a VPN connection first:

There are two methods of connecting to a network file server from a Mac computer, SMB and Appletalk. Please try the first type, Appletalk to connect to a Trinity server. If that method does not work and you are unable to connect, please try the second method, SMB.

AppleTalk

You will be able to use AppleTalk to access Zep and Tamba, but not TCData.

NOTE: Before you begin, please make sure that AppleTalk is enabled on your computer. Go to System Preferences, click on the Network icon, then select your current network connection (in most cases that would be the the Built-In Ethernet) and click on the Configure button. Select the AppleTalk tab and make sure that the box next to Make Apple Talk Active is selected.

1. Open a new Finder window and click on Network (you might have to wait for a few seconds for all the network areas to load)

2. From that list click on General Resources and then select Zep

3. Click on the Connect button

4. Another window will then pop up asking you to log in to the Zep server. Select to log in as a Registered User. In the appropriate field, enter your username in the following format cmpcntr\username and then enter your password. Click Connect.

5. Select the volumes you need to connect to and click OK.

6. When you are finished just close the window to disconnect.

SMB

1. From the Finder select the "Go" menu at the top of the screen.

2. Within that menu select the option to "Connect to Server".

3. In the connect to server window enter the following in the server address field: smb://zep.cmpcntr.tc.trincoll.edu

4. Another window will then pop up asking for authentication to the zep server. The first field should contain the CMPCNTR domain and should already be filled. The other two fields will be for your username and password (the information you use when you login to TCOnline or Outlook email).

5. The final step will be to choose which shared area on Zep you would like to access. The two most typical are data and bantam. Once you select the shared area the resource will be displayed on the Mac desktop and you can then access all files and folders within it. When you're finished using the resource, just drag the icon to the Trashcan to disconnect yourself from the server.
