PUBLIC FACILITIES

The Trinity Computing Center, located on the B floor of the LITC, provides two fully networked public computing rooms which provide access to Windows for student and classroom use. A plethora of other Windows as well as Macintosh computers are dispersed throughout the LITC for convenient access.

Bring your Trinity I.D. whenever you come to the Library and Information Technology Center. Without it, you won't have access to any of the printing or copying facilities, or be able to check out library materials. Please bring it!

Backing Up Your Files

It is vitally important that you save your work regularly and make backup copies of your work at least daily. Backing up takes a few minutes, but it is vital. When you find yourself in the unenviable position of losing a paper due to accidental erasure or disk failure, you'll certainly wish you had a backup. The best protection is by saving your data on a writable CD or saving it on a personal flash drive. Another alternative is to use two (or more) backup zip disks. The campus Web server has documentation on creating backups at http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/cc/documentation/misc/backups.html.

Do Not Save Files On Public Computers

Never save your only copy of your work to the hard disk of a public computer. These public computers (both Windows computers and Macs) reset after each reboot and permanently deletes any files saved to the hard disk.  Please be sure to back up your files regularly.

Public Computers for Student Use

The two classrooms on level B of the LITC each contain 32 fully networked Windows computers. As these rooms contain projection facilities, they are often reserved for class or workshop use, but are open for walk-in use during all other times. See the schedule sheets on the doors for reserved times, or look at the Registrar's web site at http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/registra/roomsearch/main.aspx

Other Public Computers, including Macintosh as well as Windows computers, can be found throughout the LITC on Levels A, 1, and 2 and are all on the network.

LITC Public Facilities Policies

Please note these policies carefully. All involve simple courtesy, and common sense:

  • Carry your student ID with you for access as well as to print.
  • No smoking, food, or drinks without lids are allowed in the LITC public lab facilities at any time.
  • No bicycles or rollerblades are allowed anywhere in the building.
  • No pets are allowed in the building.
  • Storage of personal software, programs, and files (including work in progress) is not allowed on public computers or fileservers. All public computers are purged and rebuilt automatically and all such personal files erased. Store personal files on a flash drive, zip disk or on the network.
  • During walk-in usage, all public computers are available on a first-come first-served basis.
  • Game playing is strongly discouraged, and anyone playing a game will be asked to give up their computer to another student with a legitimate academic purpose.
  • Program sound must always be turned off in the public areas, unless they are used with headphones. Headphones may be checked out from the media services library on level 1.
  • If you leave a machine for more than a few minutes, you may forfeit it to another student even if you leave a document on the screen, or pile your personal possessions high around the work area. Don't hog public machines!

Your cooperation with these guidelines helps us to provide you with high-quality machines in a high state of readiness, and with a working environment that is conducive to serious academic undertakings.

Printing

Two networked laser printers and a color laser printer are accessible via the network from any networked computer on campus, including computers in dorm rooms. They drop their output into three bins affixed to the wall next to the public labs on the B level of LITC. More information on printing can be found on the Computing Center's web site: http://www.trincoll.edu/RaetherCtr/ComputingCenter/GeneralServices/Printing.htm
