VIREX FOR MAC

1) Introduction

Virex is a program that protects your computer from viruses. It is vital to have an anti-virus program installed on your computer, as it is relatively easy to get infected with a computer virus. By the time you realize you've been infected, you may have already lost files you consider important or irreplaceable. You may have also infected your friends and family. The best way to avoid getting infected is to use an anti-virus program such as this one, which detects viruses before they have a chance to damage your computer. It is equally important to update this software at least weekly to recognize new viruses.

This software is licensed to Trinity College. We encourage all students to install this software and keep it updated while you are a Trinity student. When you leave Trinity you will be expected to remove this software from your computer.

Students can get a copy of the software from the network. Students who live off-campus will need to setup a VPN connection first in order to get access to the campus network.

Faculty and staff should already have Virex on their office computers. If you need assistance with your version on your office computer, please call the Help Desk at x2100.

2) Installation

Before you begin, you must remove any virus scanning software that currently exists on your computer. If you do not, Virex may conflict with this software and your computer may not function properly. You can pick up a CD with the Virex installer on it from the Help Desk, located on the B floor of the Library and Information Technology Center.

Note: If you know you have a virus now, please talk to the help desk staff about its removal prior to installing the software.

From on campus (or from off-campus after you have made a VPN connection:

1. From the Finder select the "Go" menu at the top of the screen.

2. Within that menu select the option to "Connect to Server".

3. In the new window that opens you will see an address bar towards the bottom of the screen. Within that bar please type the following: smb://zep.cmpcntr.tc.trincoll.edu

4. Another window will then pop up asking for authentication to the zep server. The first field should contain CMPCNTR. The other two fields will be for your username and password (the information you use when you login to TCOnline or email).

5. The final step will be to choose which shared area on Zep you would like to access. Select Bantam from the list. Once you select the shared area the resource will be displayed on the desktop and you can then access all files and folders within it. The Virex software installer is located in the Virus Software folder on Bantam. When you're finished using the resource and Virex has been installed, just drag the icon to the Trashcan to disconnect yourself from the server.

3) Update and Auto Update

In order to detect the latest viruses, Virex needs to be updated with the latest virus definitions. It is recommended that you update your virus definitions weekly, if not more often. If you don't update them, then you will not be protected against newer viruses, and your computer will become infected, even with the Virex software on it. You can set up Virex to automatically download and install the latest definitions.

NOTE: You must get the latest definitions now immediately, to protect your computer completely. Launch the Virex program and click on the eUpdate button on the top right of the screen. Once the update is complete, a new Virus Definitions date will appear on the bottom left of the window.

To save yourself time and convenience, you can set Virex to automatically install the latest definitions on a regular basis.

  1. From the Schedule menu, select Edit Schedule. This will open up another window like the one below.

  2. From the Diagnose drop down menu on the center left of the window, select eUpdate.

  3. From the After Start Up drop down menu, select At Specific Time (or if you prefer, you may select one of the other options).

  4. Select Weekly from the drop down menu on the center of the window.

  5. Set the date close to the beginning of the month.

  6. Click the Add button.

  7. Click the Save button.

  8. The computer will install the new update at the designated time. Note: your computer must be turned on and be on the network at the scheduled time before the update can take place. If your computer is not updated, and there is a new set of virus definitions available, the Virus Definitions date on the bottom left of the Virex program mentioned earlier will be in red text. Just run eUpdate to get the latest version of virus definitions immediately.

If you need any help or have any questions please call the Help Desk at x2007 or stop by the desk on Level B of the LITC.
