Keeping Windows Windows 2000 Up To Date

Like all programs, operating systems (OS's) are released in an imperfect, "satisfactory" state.  This means that even off the shelf they are rife with bugs and security flaws.  As these are discovered by hackers or security firms, the OS's parent company (in this case, Microsoft) releases patches to fix the security holes.  It is vitally important to the security of your computer to regularly download and install these updates.

Automated Windows Update

The easiest way to keep Windows 2000 up to date is to turn on the automated update tool that comes with the OS.  However, this option appears to only be available when installing or upgrading Windows.

Manually Updating Windows

In order to update Windows manually, you must be logged in as a user with administrative access.  If you are the only user on your computer, or if you have ever successfully installed a program such as AOL Instant Messenger, then you have administrative access.

  • Getting to the Windows Update web page

The Windows Update website can be reached by clicking on the Start menu, then Programs (or All Programs), then Windows Update.  It can also be reached by opening an Internet Explorer, clicking on the Tools menu, and clicking Windows Update.  It can also be reached by clicking here.  If it is your first time visiting the Windows Update site, a window (pictured below) will pop up to ask if you want to install a program from Microsoft.  Click Yes.

  • Scan for and install updates

  • Scan for and install updates

When the following screen appears, click Scan for Updates.  This will not send any personal information about you to Microsoft.

Once your computer has been scanned, a list of updates available to your system will appear at the left.

It is strongly recommended that you install all Critical Updates, which appear selected by default.  You may browse through the Windows 2000 updates and install them at if you wish, but they contain noncritical updates for programs such as Windows Media Player.  We do not recommend that you install the Driver Updates.  If you are experiencing driver problems, download updated drivers from the manufacturer's website.

Once you have selected all the updates you wish to install, click the green Review and Install button, followed by the Install Now button.

Certain updates, such as Windows Service Packs, must be downloaded separately from other updates.  In these cases, follow the onscreen instructions for downloading and installing the Service Pack; it will then be necessary to run Windows Update again.  Many updates require you to restart your computer after installing them; this can usually be done at your convenience.
