An Overview of Basic Internet Security

I) Free Virus-Scanning Software: for Windows and Mac

Viruses are the single most virulent and dangerous of threats to a computer connected to the Internet.  Click here to find free virus protection programs, and instructions on their proper use, with which you can effectively protect your computer from virus threats.

II) Keeping your OS up to date

It is vital to the security of your computer that you regularly install the Operating System patches released by your OS's parent company.  Here you will find instructions for this quick and easy process for both Windows and Mac OS.

III) The Annoyance of Spyware

Spyware, known in industry parlance as targeted advertising, is what's making all those ads pop up over your regular ad-free websites.  It could also be sending your personal, financial, and legal information to parties you probably don't want to have it.  Click here for information about spyware, how to avoid getting it, and how to get rid of it once you have it.

IV) Know the Rules and Regulations

Sharing, downloading, and using pirated music, movies, or programs is illegal.  The music industry is taking aggressive action against individual users of pirated material, and has even taken legal action against students here at Trinity.  This page contains Trinity College's policy on piracy on its network.  You are responsible for knowing this information: ignorance of the rules is not an acceptable defense.

 V)  Violations and Infractions of Policy

When any use of the information systems at Trinity College poses an imminent threat to other users or to the network infrastructure, network administrators may take whatever steps are necessary to isolate the threat, without notice if warranted by the situation.  Infractions that violate College policies may result in a disciplinary action. Furthermore, the College will not protect individuals who violate state and federal law from legal action. Find out more about how violations are handled by clicking on the link above.

VI) Backing up Files and Running Checkdisk

Whenever you are working on files in public spaces or labs it is important to know how to backup your files.

If your computer is experiencing performance issues or a corrupt system file, running the checkdisk utility is a good way to check and fix errors on your computer.
