Data

The Reference department at the Library provides access to many data sources, including statistical data, via the network and on CD-Rom. The reference librarians can provide details. Rachel Barlow, the Social Science Data Services Coordinator in the Library is also available to provide assistance to faculty in the Social Sciences. More information can be found on her website at http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/library/ssdata.

The Computing Center maintains access to a more limited number of sources of data. These are outlined below. More details on the individual databases are available from Academic Computing.

Some of this data is readily available on the campus network and is updated regularly, for the benefit of social science classes. Among the data currently available on fileserver share areas are the General Social Survey and the American National Election Studies. Contact David Tatem (x2124) with any questions about these data sources.

Haver Analytics

A contract with Haver Analytics of New York provides Trinity users with access to the latest economic data. A simple web-based interface provides data for the variables and time periods required. A variety of output data formats are supported.

Please check with David Tatem (x2124) for additional information.

ICPSR

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research at the University of Michigan is a "central repository and dissemination service for machine-readable social science data". ICPSR's holdings are enormous. Sample titles:

  • German Election Panel Study
  • Aspirin Myocardial Infarction Study
  • Family Budget Study
  • War Ledger Data
  • Higher Education General Information Survey
  • Offender Based Transaction Statistics
  • ABC News General Election Exit Surveys, 1984
  • Survey of Public Interest Group Members
  • Survey of Consumer Attitudes and Behavior
  • Norwegian Ecological Data, 1868-1903

and so on.

Trinity is a member of ICPSR, which provides its data in electronic format via the web. You can search their web holdings and access some data sets for free but you will have to contact David Tatem (x2124) to download most data sets.  ICPSR also offers a variety of other academic resources on their site at http://www.icpsr.umich.edu.

Internet Resources

Academic Computing also maintains a web page, linked from the Academic Computing page, that contains many Web sites of interest to social scientists. A number of these links point to data sources.
