VPN Client Configuration for Mac

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection is required to access campus resources normally available only from Trinity's on-campus network, including file servers and library databases. A VPN connection allows an individual to access these resources remotely from anywhere in which they have a connection to the Internet. For the most secure VPN connection, the client of choice is the Cisco VPN client which supports Mac OS X, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4.

Download the VPN Client

Download the appropriate version to your computer. Click on the link below and when prompted, select Save to Disk:

Mac OS X 10.4: http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/cc/documentation/comm-dialin/VPN/VPN_Cisco/vpnclient-darwin-4.9.01.0080-universal-k9.dmg
Or
Mac OS X 10.2 / 10.3: http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/cc/documentation/comm-dialin/VPN/VPN_Cisco/vpnclient-darwin-4.8.00.0490-GUI-k9.dmg

Install the Cisco VPN Client

Double-click on the CiscoVPNClient folder, and then double-click on the Cisco VPN Client.mpkg file to start the installation.

It may take a few seconds to allow the installation process to start automatically. You'll be presented with a series of setup windows. Click Continue and accept the license agreement when prompted. When asked to select a destination volume, select the Macintosh HD and then click Continue.

Start up the client interface by going to
Applications > VPNClient:

A new window opens. To create a connection to Trinity, click on the New icon and then the Create New VPN Connection Entry window will be displayed. Under the Authentication tab, enter the following information:

  • For Connection Entry, enter Trinity College VPN.

  • For Host, enter callahan.trincoll.edu.

  • Select Group Authentication.

  • For Name, enter Everyone. NOTE: The 'E' in Everyone MUST be CAPITALIZED!!!

  • For Password, enter Iga+/8TLC9 (the password begins with a capital i). Keep in mind that the Name and Password entered here is required to encrypt the login session and is not what grants access to the campus resources. NOTE: DO NOT copy and paste this password from this web page to your VPN window as that will cause authentication to fail. You must type it by hand:

Click on the Transport tab. Select Enable Transparent Tunneling and IPSec over UDP (NAT/PAT):

Click Save to save the configuration and return to the Client Connection entry window.

To Start a VPN Connection

Select the connection entry for Trinity College and then click Connect in the client window:

When prompted, enter your Trinity username and password (that you use for your e-mail, TCOnline, etc.). A message will appear on the bottom left of the window when you are connected successfully. Trinity library resources, or college servers, etc. will now be available to you via the web. To view your connection statistics, click Status on the menu bar and then select Statistics, you should see a screen similar to the following:
