CONNECTING TO TRINITY FROM OFF-CAMPUSIf you are off campus you may have the choice of accessing the Trinity network and the Internet via a cable modem or DSL line. Cable and DSL connections are not available everywhere, so check with your local cable and/or phone company to see if these options are available to you. Either of these methods will give you a much faster connection than the standard 56k modem dial in ISP companies such as AOL and Earthlink provide. How much faster depends on many factors. To get an overview of the pros and cons of each method we recommend that you read the FAQ pages from Speed Guide.net at http://www.speedguide.net/faq_in.php?category=88. These articles describe the differences between DSL and Cable modems, as well as other information. While this article is geared towards Windows users the information applies to Mac users as well. How does a Cable or DSL connection affect access to network resources? When you use a Cable modem or DSL line you are getting on the Internet through your cable or phone company. If you were to dial in from AOL or Earthlink, the following issues apply to you as well. Blackboard, TCOnline and webmail are accessible from ANY Internet connection. However, there other services that are only available on campus on Trinity's network. These include some web-based applications such as searching the library's databases, or accessing our system of file servers (tamba, zep, etc.). In these cases you will need to set up Virtual Private Networking or VPN . This process is outlined in our VPN documentation at http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/cc/documentation/comm-dialin/VPN/.
