PUBLIC PRINTING FROM A
PERSONALLY OWNED MAC OS X COMPUTER
The main printing facility in the Library and Information
Technology Center is on Level B. All publicly available computers in the LITC
are set to print by default to the printer on the floor they are located, which
includes printers on Level 1 and Level A. Students can only print from their
dorm room to the printers on Level B. Follow the instructions below to print to
the black and white public printers on Level B. Additional information on
printing to the color printer on Level B is
included at the end of this page.
Each
semester you receive $25.00 dollars of free "Printing Dollars".
After the Printing Dollars are depleted, print
jobs will then be taken out of your "Bantam
Bucks" account.
Printing costs
$0.14 per sheet printed. So 2 pages printed
Simplex (one-sided) would be $0.28. The same 2 page job
would cost $0.14 printed Duplex
(double-sided). Color
printing is $1.00 a page.
Bantam bucks can be
added at transaction stations located around campus or via the web at
http://tcommerce.trincoll.edu.
NOTE: You must be on the campus
network in order to connect to the public printers and print.
Obtain Install File
First, download and install
the printer drivers for HP LaserJet 9050dn at
http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/cc/documentation/Public_printing/HPLaserJet_v5_5_2.dmg.
Then download the following
file to your computer: Popups_6_X.dmg. Double-click on this file
on your computer and the following window will open:

Install Pharos Printing
- Double-click on the Popup.pkg file. The Pharos
Popup 6.1 for Mac OS X installer will activate.

- You will then be guided through the simple process of installation.
When prompted, make sure the application is being installed in the correct
location.

- During the
installation, you may be prompted to authenticate yourself as an
administrator of the computer. Enter your local credentials.

- When prompted, provide
the following information regarding the Server Address:

-
Keep the Server Port settings at 28212

-
When prompted to disable popups, do not disable. Leave it
the way it is and click on Continue.

- Once the installation
has completed, you may close the window by selecting Done.

Connecting to the Printer
- On Mac OSX 10.3 and Mac
OSX 10.4, open Printer Setup Utility in the Finder, under the "Go" menu,
in "Utilities".
On Mac OSX 10.2, open Print Center in the same
location. The following
window will appear:

- On Mac OS X 10.4, click
the "Add" button
in the toolbar, then hold down the Option key on the keyboard and click on
the "More Printers..." button. On Mac OS X 10.2 and on Mac OS X 10.3, hold
down the Option key on the keyboard and click on the "Add" button in the
toolbar.

- From the topmost
pull-down menu, select "Advanced". From the "Device" pull-down menu, select "Pharos Print Server".

- For the Device Name
field, enter "litcbflr" and for the Devic URl field, enter "popup://157.252.15.23:515/litcbflr". For Printer Model select
HP. Scroll down and select HP LaserJet 9050
and click on Add (if this printer is not available, selecting
"Generic" for Printer Model will work in most cases).

Setting Up Options
This section optimizes your printer connection, reducing
the likelihood of an error, and allowing you to print on both sides of a sheet
of paper if you wish.
- While still in the Printer
List window, click on your
newly added printer (it will be named "litcbflr at 157.252.15.23").
Then at
the menu bar at the top, select "Printers" and select "Show Info". A window
will appear with a pull-down menu near the top; within this, select
Installable Options. Click the boxes next to "Tray 4" and "Duplex
Unit" so that they are checked. Further down, set Total Printer
Memory to "128 - 255 MB". If, for some reason, this is not the highest
printer memory setting, set it to the highest number available, or 128 MB,
whichever is smaller. Click Apply Changes and close the window.

- One last step is required.
Launch any program you wish to print from (Word, Excel, etc.) open a
document, and select Print from the File menu. Select the litcbflr printer from
the list. Change the third popup menu to Finishing. Select Left
Output Bin for
the Output Destination. This will ensure your print job comes out through
the wall (instead of printing out on top of the printer, which you cannot
reach).

- Save this change by
selecting Save As from the Presets menu and name it.

You have now completed public printing setup on your Mac OS X computer. If you have any questions or problems, feel free to call Trinity College's
Computer Help Desk at x2007.
