Creating diacritical marks on the Macintosh


Acute -- á, é, í, etc.:

  • While holding down the Option key, strike e; then release all
  • Type desired vowel


Grave -- à, è, ì, etc.:

  • While holding down the Option key, strike ` (upper-left on keyboard); then release all
  • Type desired vowel


Circumflex -- â, ê, î, ô, etc.:

  • While holding down the Option key, strike i; then release all
  • Type desired vowel


Trema -- ä, ë, ö, ü, etc.:

  • While holding down the Option key, strike u; then release all
  • Type desired vowel


Tilde -- ñ, õ, etc.:

  • While holding down the Option key, strike n; then release all
  • Type desired letter


Cedilla -- ç:

  • While holding down the Option key, strike c


For ß:

  • While holding down the Option key, strike s


For ¿:

  • While holding down Shift and Option simultaneously, strike ?


For ¡:

  • While holding down the Option key, strike 1


For «:

  • While holding down the Option key, strike \


For »:

  • While holding down Shift and Option simultaneously, strike \


For ‹ (as opposed to dash, -):

  • While holding down Shift and Option simultaneously, strike dash
