The FrontPage Editor

All we now have is one blank web page. The next step is to use the FrontPage Editor to add text, links, and images to that page.

To get into the FrontPage Editor from the Explorer:

  1. Select Tools.
  2. Select Show FrontPage Editor.

Now we need to tell the Editor which page to work on;

  1. Select File.
  2. Select Open.
  3. Select Index.htm.

NOTE

All web pages end with htm or html.

Index.htm (or index.html) is the first file in a given directory that a browser, such as Netscape, will open. For instance, if someone looks at Academic Computing's web space (www.trincoll.edu/~acad/) and does not specify a particular page name, the browser will look for www.trincoll.edu/~acad/index.html.

You're now looking at the main page for the FrontPage Editor:

Giving Your Page a Title

A useful place to start is by giving your web page a Title. The title is what viewers see at the very top of their screens when they pull up your page. The title of this page, for instance, is "FrontPage Editor." The title is also what the Explorer shows you when you're looking at an overview of your web.

To give your page a title:

  1. Select File from the Menu bar.
  2. Select Page Properties.
  3. Change the contents of the Title line.
  4. Click OK.

Adding Text to Your Page

Adding text to your page is as simple as putting the cursor at the beginning of the page and beginning to type. Stop for a moment and try putting a few lines of text on your new page.

Saving your page

When you're done, save your work by selecting File/Save from the Menu bar.
