Letter to Parents |
Lanna C. Hagge, Director Career Services
Office |
“Don’t forget to
…”
A recent
“New Yorker” cartoon shows the back of a station wagon with a stack
of boxes tightly tied to the roof. The driver and a fully
packed interior are silhouetted. On the rear windshield is a
sticker telling us the entering passenger’s destination,
E@UNIVERSITY. An enormously cheerful couple stands next to the
car waving goodbye as they give their departing college student one
last bit of advice, “Don’t forget to click Reply.” These parents are
far too casual in their farewell to be first-timers and are
obviously practiced at letting go.
Whether
you are a parent of a new or returning Trinity student you have
probably provided lots of advice and guidance to your
offspring. As a parent of a twenty-something myself, I can
assure you that eventually adult children acknowledge the value of
some of your hard won wisdom. (I keep a running record of kudos from
my son, blithely ignoring the brevity of the
list.)
At
Trinity, your student has the opportunity to benefit from the advice
of faculty and staff committed to helping maximize his or her
college experience. But there is another important resource
for your student: the extended family of Trinity graduates and
parents.
Each
year hundreds of alumni and parents make themselves available on and
off campus to provide counsel and networking contacts for students.
Weekly Career Services events (see schedule below) are
offered to help students learn how to leverage their liberal arts
education into their field of interest or perhaps discover new
possibilities. Advice is easily available from seasoned
professionals as well as recent graduates on preparing for advanced
study, pursuing internships, interviewing for entry-level jobs and
launching a successful job search. If your son or daughter is
hoping to network in a specific city, Career Services can likely
identify Trinity contacts.
Encourage your student to take full
advantage of Trinity’s powerful network throughout their Trinity
career. They may learn about a summer job at the annual New
York networking reception in January, contact an alumnus at a
major investment firm in London who assists in securing an
internship during a year abroad, uncover the secrets to freelance
journalism, or find out how to move into the sports and
entertainment industries.
Though
all Career Services events are extensively publicized, parents are
invited to send an email to their offspring asking him or her to log
onto Trinity Recruiting this week, check the calendar of Career
Services events, and let you know that this occurred. Say,
“Don’t forget to click Reply”. Repeat as needed.
Cheers,
Lanna
