Letter to Parents |

All about finding those great summer jobs |
Dear Parents:
Where can your student find 12,000 ideas and leads
for summer jobs and internships?
Here’s a test: ask your student to tell you what
“Trinity Recruiting” is. If the response is not something to the effect
of: “That’s the website where Career Services keeps all of its job
listings”, then you have the right to raise an eyebrow in indignant
surprise.
Simply, Trinity Recruiting is the one-stop shopping
place for every opportunity that passes through our Career Services
Office. All students looking for part-time, full-time or summer jobs
need to know about it. Parents, that’s why we’re telling YOU…We already
tell them about it daily.
It’s winter, so naturally we’re already thinking
about summer. That means it’s time to land that spectacular SUMMER JOB,
the outstanding experience which, when added to a resume, is going to
separate the wheat from the chaff come senior year.
You should know, through your student’s personal
Trinity Recruiting account (every student has one, use it or not), your son or daughter can access a comprehensive listing of
summer opportunities (that’s the 12,000 I mentioned above). In
partnership with a group of selective colleges, Trinity College annually
contacts organizations across the country soliciting summer job and
internship listings for liberal arts students. Advertising, summer
teaching programs, public policy, finance, engineering, publishing,
scientific research, marketing and journalism are just a small sample of
the fields represented.
Encourage your student to take the first step for
summer success during this winter break by writing or updating his or
her resume. A guide to
resume writing is available
here. We are open during the break, but students are welcome to
send their resume drafts as attachments to
career-services@trincoll.edu and career advisors will work with
them via email. While home, students can access their Trinity
Recruiting account via our web site and begin to identify
possibilities. If their interests are still broad, as is the case for
most underclass students, reviewing leads can provide ideas beyond the
familiar.
Deadlines can be as early as December for summer
jobs and as late as May, but often the high quality opportunities have
January or February deadlines. Even if deadlines are later, students
that express interest in an organization early and cultivate contacts
soon, are viewed by employers as motivated and having initiative,
valuable traits in the workplace, you’ll agree.
Contacts made during a summer job search can evolve
into a strong network for full-time opportunities and further study.
The effort put into a summer job teaches students how to develop an
effective job search strategy and provides a reality check that mirrors
the work ethic required when seeking an entry level job or applying to
graduate school later.
Ask your student to use Trinity Recruiting, to have
a resume ready and to meet with Career Services staff upon
returning to campus. Students who will be in New York City on January 6,
should be encouraged attend the
alumni-student networking event
scheduled from 5:30-7:30PM. Second semester’s career
calendar is already filled with alumni career sessions covering fundraising, radio advertising, museum and gallery work, women in finance,
and human services to name a few. And alumni will be on campus
presenting on topics such as, “How to Negotiate a Tough Job Market” and
“So You Don’t Want to Work on Wall Street”.
Warm wishes from the Career Services staff for a
happy and prosperous new year.
Cheers,
Lanna C.
Hagge
