 Letter to Parents

Lanna C. Hagge, Director Career Services Office

To the Parents of New Trinity Students

Welcome!

Beyond the packing, unpacking and cheery or teary good-byes is an abundance of rich educational opportunities for your student at Trinity.  We are proud that your son or daughter chose Trinity and the Career Services staff members are looking forward to helping your student develop and achieve his or her educational, social and professional goals.

Having followed a career path that has lead me through the realms of business, human services, university teaching, fund raising and career services, I am convinced of one thing: A first-rate liberal arts education in combination with hands-on experience is the key to students successfully positioning themselves for their future endeavors.

According to the most recent internship survey conducted by Vault.com, 86% of seniors responding at 99 colleges and universities completed one or more internships by graduation and 69% completed two or more.  Since 1995, when Vault.com conducted its first internship survey showing that 62% of college seniors completed at least one internship by graduation, there has been a 38.7% increase.

Hands-on experience through volunteer work, campus activities, summer jobs and academic internships (starting sophomore year) is requisite for many fields such as medicine, teaching, finance, journalism, human services and advertising.

Developing good academic skills is primary to benefiting from all Trinity offers, we hope you will encourage your son or daughter to explore interests and develop talents by gaining work experiences to augment his or her classroom learning. For starters, your student can participate in “Do it Day” on Saturday, September 14. There they will join other students, faculty and staff in volunteering for a community project.  In late January, the Community Service and Civic Engagement Office sponsors a volunteer fair to provide students with the chance to meet staff from community organizations and to volunteer.

Your student has three summers before graduation from Trinity to gain experience and Career Services is eager to assist her or him to maximize the benefits of a summer well spent. For a check list of suggestions for first year students to consider, click here .

Congratulations to you and your student on the accomplishments that enable us to welcome you to the Trinity family.

Best wishes,

Lanna C. Hagge

"By pursuing a summer internship after my freshman year, I was able to get first-hand experience in a business setting and realize what jobs were out there. That exposure allowed me to meet industry leaders, explore other fields, and gave me the background to pursue other opportunities. Without that valuable foundation, I certainly would not have been given the opportunity I have today."

Regional Field Director, Rowland for Governor 2002.
