Consultant at Andersen Consulting

Interviewer: Greg Ward '02

What was your major and would you recommend it to a Trinity college student now?
I majored in Math and I would definitely recommend it to any student.

Could you please give us an overview of what you do at Andersen Consulting?

I am very fortunate; I am a partner at Andersen so I get to do a lot of different things. My main responsibility is to help our business grow, bringing in clients and generating revenue for the company. I also play a role on recruiting people.

How do you feel Trinity prepared you for what you are doing today?
I think that getting a liberal arts education was very important. People sometimes undervalue the importance of good writing and presentation skills. Going to a school like Trinity really prepares you for your future career by exposing you to so many different things-in and outside the classroom-and developing your writing and presentation skills.

When did you know that this was something you wanted to do?
A lot of people know what they want to do while they are in college or right after they graduate. For me, I wasn’t too sure; I tested the waters. I talked to technology companies like IBM and many other different firms.

What was your first job and did that set you on your path?
I worked in grocery stores when I was young. In college, I had the opportunity to work for an insurance company in Hartford. Right after graduation, I started working for Andersen.

Do you have a typical day here?
As a partner, I really don’t have a typical day. I tend to work on multiple things. Things are different every single day. Today, for example, I finalized a contract for some work we are going to do. Later, I will be on the client side working with a project for a specific client, and at the end of the day I will meet with a senior woman executive.

Can you describe an aspect of your job that keeps you happy and make all the hard work worthwhile?
One of the things we really focus on in the past two years is the notion of a community. The purpose of a community in Andersen is to provide career counseling, training, and have our employees interacting with each other. My job is also to make sure that everything is going well in that group. That leadership role is something that I enjoy about this job.

How do you stay current in your field?

We help our clients trying to define where the industry is going. In order for us to do that, we have to stay very informed. The Internet and all the different magazines and newspapers out there help me a lot. We participate in seminars also and they keep us inform about all the trends affecting our business.

How important do you think networking is in your business and how important was it for you when you were looking for a job?
I think networking is very important. We encourage a lot of young employees to do that; to get known, and make yourself visible. It’s a skill and every person should have it.

Did you participate in any extracurricular activities while you were at Trinity that you would recommend to current students?
I think it’s very important that people have interest in activities beyond academics. The more you can do, the better. You have to create some balance in your life and do the things you enjoy doing. Don’t just do them for the sake of putting it in your resume. You’ll get more out of it if you enjoy it.

Do you have any last word of advice for Trinity students graduating soon and about to enter the work force?
Be more aggressive on your job search. Don’t wait until the middle of your senior year in college to start looking for a job. You don’t have to know what you want to do exactly, just get out there and apply to all the things you are interested in.
