Law School Applicants for Fall 2005

Important Change in Submitting Recommendations

·        Starting Monday, October 4, 2004, the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) will release a new, enhanced Letter of Recommendation Service.

·        The new Letter of Recommendation Service (LOR) enables you to direct your recommendations to specific law schools based on each school’s requirements or preferences.

·        Different letters can also be directed to specific law schools based on the intended use of the letter. For example a student who interned for the Department of Environmental Protection might ask a professor to write a specific letter, including information about the internship, to a law school that offers an environmental law specialty. The description of the letter would be: “For Smith School of Law’s Environmental Law Program.”  Or an internship supervisor or an attorney at a law firm at which the candidate has worked may want to recommend the applicant to her alma mater. The description of this letter might be “For Smith School of Law.”

·        A candidate may have up to four general letters on file in addition to numerous directed letters. Multiple LORs from a single recommender will be accepted providing the opportunity to request both general and targeted letters from each recommender.

·        Letters received prior to the launch of the expanded service will be used as general letters (up to four, in the order they are received) for any law school report requests that come in before that date.  After October 4, general letters can be designated as targeted letters. The law school’s LOR preferences will be indicated to the candidate onscreen during the process.

·        LORs must be received at least two weeks prior to a school’s deadline.

·        LSAC will continue to accept copies of letters from Career Services. However, new letters submitted to Career Services rather than directly to LSAC delay the completion of your application.
