| 6664 | ANTH-209-01 | Theorizing Blk Atlantic World | 1.00 | LEC | Holsey,Bayo | TR:02:40PM-03:55PM | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This course explores the
imagined geography of the Black Atlantic World. The forced migration of
Africans throughout the world during the transatlantic slave trade has led
many theorists to posit the existence of a geographic entity called the
Black Atlantic. But what is this entity and what is its significance as a
theoretical tool? Through ethnographic texts, we will examine both the experiences of black peoples in different parts of the world, including Africa, Europe, and the Americas and various theories about the connections among these places, be they historical, political, or emotional. Specific topics will include memories of the slave trade, diaspora tourism to Africa, and the transmission of cultural forms, religious practices, and political movements among different points in the Black Atlantic. In addition, we will examine the emotive force of the notion of Africa as homeland, and other powerful narratives of linkage and black community. |
