Eligibility: All full-time members of the Faculty at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor who are in at least their second year of service at the College are eligible to apply.  Funding is contingent on the recipient’s continued employment at the College during the period of the grant.

Although the Faculty Research Committee includes faculty from each of the four curricular groupings of the College (Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences & Mathematics, and the Arts), each proposal is read and voted on by all members of the Committee (six faculty members and the Dean of the Faculty). It is, therefore, imperative that proposals be written in language that can be readily understood by a college-wide faculty committee, the members of which are not specialists in the applicant's field. Particular care should be taken to avoid jargon; if technical language must be employed, it should be accompanied by a clear explanation.

Application: The following guidelines should be adhered to strictly in preparing your proposal:

COVER SHEET: Title of project, name, department, and an abstract of no more than 100 words.

BODY OF THE PROPOSAL: In no more than five (5) double-spaced pages, explain your project. Include a statement of the goals of your proposed research, the significance of the work, and the form in which the results will appear (publication, performance, etc.). Also explain the procedures or methodologies to be used in carrying out your research. Include a brief review of relevant literature and a statement regarding prior scholarly endeavors that have prepared you to undertake the project. For reasons of fairness, applications that do not adhere to the five (5) double-spaced page limit will be disqualified from consideration.

            APPENDIX 1: Attach a copy of your curriculum vitae.

            APPENDIX 2: a) List all current and anticipated sources of research funding, including funds from departmental sources, the Dean of Faculty’s office, external grants, internal grants, and funds associated with endowed chairs. b) List all attempts to obtain research funding from Trinity College (including from departmental sources, the Dean of Faculty’s Office, etc.) and from external sources during the past five years or since coming to Trinity (whichever is shorter). Include title of proposal, amount requested, source, period of proposed funding, and the disposition of the proposal. Provide a brief indication of the publications or similar results for each grant awarded. Be sure to include any pending proposals.

            APPENDIX 3: Attach a copy of the curriculum vitae of any collaborators who will participate in the proposed research.

Evaluation Criteria: The Committee regularly receives more proposals than it can fund. In making its decisions, the Committee will base its judgments on the following criteria:

·         the clarity of the proposal;

·         the coherence of the objectives and the timeliness of the proposal;

·         the clarity of the methods of research;

·         the persuasiveness of the case made concerning the significance of the research;

·         the likelihood that the objectives can be achieved within the leave period;

·         the potential of the proposed work to further the applicant’s scholarly program;

·         the justification for an extension of the regular leave period..

Judgments will be based solely on the written application. Because the Committee expects to receive more deserving applications than it can fund, preference may be given to applicants who have not previously received research leaves.
