I took this picture in Guánica, Puerto Rico, on July 25th, 1998. The event was a rally sponsored by the Puerto Rican Independence Party to mark the 100th anniversary of the invasion of Puerto Rico through the port of Guánica (just a few yards/meters away from where this photo was taken). I took this and a series of other photographs at the precise moment the crowd, perhaps about 25,000, where singing the original , 19th-century revolutionary version of the Puerto Rican national anthem, "La Borinqueña." Unfortunately, I was not able to talk to the woman pictured here. The crowd was so tightly packed that it was virtually impossible to move one inch in either direction, and by the time the rally ended she was gone and I went on to take several other photographs, including one featured in the logo for another one of my courses, Hist. 378: Puerto Rico. I suspect that I will eventually replace this photo with another one taken at a stateside political demonstration. Luis A. Figueroa |
