Lee Harvey Oswald himself was assassinated as
he was being transferred from one jail to another a few days after the shooting by Jack Ruby.
Ruby was a narcotics dealer and a government and Dallas police informant from 1946-1947
who gave information on supposed Communists and Cuban activities in return for the
authorities ignoring his ties to organized crime and drug dealing. Some believe that the
CIA and the FBI allowed President Kennedys real killers to go free because of their
links to the government and knowledge of illegal activities within both bureaus.
There is also the case of the mysterious "Umbrella Man"
and his companion, both of whom were among the closest to President Kennedy when the
assassination occured. The fact that they remained calm and held an umbrella is viewed by
many to be a signal to the shooters that the President had not been killed and more shots
were required. How does this pertain to CIA involvement? There are those that believe the
symbol of the umbrella was indicative of President Kennedy's refusal to support an
"umbrella" air support policy to the invaders during the Bay of Pigs incident.
The theory goes that these men were Anti-Castro Cubans in league with members of the CIA
who were angry with the President for his air support veto.
The "evidence" behind theories of law enforcement
bureau involvement is to be found everywhere from the Internet, which is a Mecca for
conspiracy believers, to the movies as in Oliver
Stones film JFK that succeeded in getting a resolution passed to open up more files for public
viewing in the National Archives in 1992. However, so much evidence has been lost or
misplaced and so many of the key figures alive on that day in Dallas have since
disappeared in both natural and unnatural ways, that it is next to impossible to discern
what really happened on November 22, 1963. It is possible to look at the circumstances
surrounding the shooting and make a judgment based on the available evidence.
It would be hard to believe, as the Warren Commission would
have everyone think that one shooter killed John Kennedy with one bullet based on
ballistics and other provided evidence, but if Lee Harvey Oswald did not kill Kennedy
alone, then who helped him? Was Oswald involved with the CIA and the FBI in an underhanded
attempt to gain information on the Russians, or Cubans, or Mafia that failed and so they
set him up to take the fall for President Kennedys assassination? Oswald claimed he
was on another floor entirely eating lunch at the time President Kennedy was shot, and
there were witnesses to back him up. When the blame is placed on others besides Oswald, it
opens up a new can of worms for everyone involved in a time of Communist hatred and
intense fear for any "subversive" actions that might be taken. There was even
research done that blamed Lyndon B. Johnson and J. Edgar Hoover plotted together to kill
Kennedy and rise to power in such a manner.
Another possible connection is between the Mafia and the
CIA. There have been numerous theories that encompass the whole JFK assassination. One of
these is that the Mafia was involved. This theory is very possible due to the fact that
the President and his brother Senator Robert Kennedy were making a much more aggressive
stance on organized crime than had Presidents which preceded him. It is also well known
that the Mobsters didnt like the presidents brother due to his probes into
supposed racketeering. This theory isnt nearly as strong as the others however what
is certain is this: The mob themselves clearly had the resources and motive to kill the
President. If they were to end Kennedy's life, perhaps the investigations that were being
conducted by his brother would end abruptly and permanently. However it is very unlikely
due to the fact that they really had no ties to the accused assassin Oswald and that over
the last 30 years their silence has been kept about the incident.
After careful analysis and interpretations of numerous
different documents, we feel that while Oswald certainly had a part in the controversy, it
is unknown exactly what his role was in the FBI and CIA, or what role the two agencies
played overall. The FBI and the CIA were the two primary sources to release all
information, in fact the only sources with control over the investigation, thus making
them the most able to cover up any wrongdoing or information that would potray them in a
negative light. The FBI and CIA knew of the potential consequences of any possible
involvement in such an act, and therefore acted in ways, that while it is hard to connect
all of the evidence, are certainly carry underhanded connotations.
The question then comes down to how does this pertain to historiography and the
development of analyses. There are such a multitude of questions, disputed facts,
exaggerations and interpretations surrounding the Kennedy assassination that it is almost
impossible for anyone, including the researcher, to make an informed opinion without
another piece of evidence coming up to contradict said opinion. It is the job of the
historian to look at the hard evidence as closely as possible and make interpretations in
keeping with whatever amount of "truth" he or she may be able to find.
These multiple analyses and their development come from both respected
historians and theorists who publish webpages for something to do in their spare time. The
point is, with enough interest in the subject matter and time to commit, anyone can
develop a historical analysis of their own and it is the job of the educated reader to
discern whose research and opinions they find valuable. The Kennedy case is a perfect
example of the discipline of history, as there are rarely specific and accurate answers to
pressing problems but instead a large number of varied interpretations to be critically
analyzed.
