Parents + Families

Dear Parent:

Greetings from the Office of Study Away. We are proud of the many quality opportunities that Trinity offers your son or daughter to study away during his or her college career.  More than 60 percent of Trinity students study away by the time they graduate, and our goal is to help students choose a program that will help them explore their academic and professional interests so that their time away complements their Trinity College education and helps them stand out and succeed after graduation.

Trinity offers its own semester/year study away programs in Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, New York City, Paris, Rome, Shanghai , and Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.  These programs have been created to complement the Trinity curriculum and are overseen by Trinity faculty.  Trinity faculty-led summer programs vary by year, but include options in China & SE Asia, Italy, Israel, Germany, & Spain.  In addition, students can choose from many other approved programs around the world that have been reviewed  by the Trinity College Curriculum Committee.

Did you know?

  • Students can take their financial aid with them for semester/full year study, making study away affordable.  The costs of study away are generally comparable to the costs at Trinity, with some added travel expenses.
  • Students can receive credit towards their major, minor, or general education requirements while studying away.  With proper planning, all majors can study away and earn a full semester or year of credit.
  • Students can pursue internships, field study, research projects, community service, sports placements, and other options while studying away.
  • International experience is increasingly important in today's urban and global world - study away can help make your son or daughter more competitive in the workplace, as well as enriching his or her Trinity education.

To ensure that your son or daughter is able to study away, s/he must be succeeding academically at Trinity, with a GPA of at least 2.5 (many programs require a 3.0 or better), apply by appropriate deadlines and ensure s/he is keeping on track in planning for the experience and talking with his/her academic advisor, as well as his/her study away advisor.

Each Trinity student who applies to study away is offered comprehensive advising and a general pre-departure orientation, to compliment the program specific information they receive from their study away program provider, to help prepare them for their experience away.  We hope your child shares this information with you, but you can also access the Guidelines to Study Away and Student Pre-Departure Handbook here for your own reference.  The general Pre-Departure Handbook contains general information and tips about studying abroad and should be referred to by you and your child in addition to the program-specific information you receive.
