Non-Trinity Summer Programs

Non-Trinity Summer Programs

There are so many amazing ways to spend your summer and so many programs available.  Trinity College generally approves summer programs offered by provider organizations and institutions that appear on Trinity’s approved list of study away programs for the academic year.  This list can be found in the Guidelines for Study Away link below or available at 66 Vernon Street. Please refer to the guidelines to assist you in identifying  international summer options or come in for an appointment.

If you are considering a non-Trinity summer program, please read the information below on how to fulfill the following steps for participation on your program of choice.  You must complete the following:
  1. Submit the  SUMMER REQUEST to STUDY AWAY
  2. Submit an  Application for Transfer Credit to the Registrar's Office
  3. Apply to your program of choice
  4. If you are looking for major/minor credit, this must be documented BEFORE your participation on your summer program by the chair of your major/minor department.
Any Trinity student planning on attending a non-Trinity Summer program, from another college or University or through a Study Abroad Program provider, MUST complete the SUMMER REQUEST to STUDY AWAY form available on-line. Once this form is completed and approved, then you can complete the Application for Transfer Credit required by the Trinity College Registrar's Office.  You will also work directly with your program of choice and submit to them the application for your program.

The rules for transfer credit outlined in the Student Handbook and the Guidelines for Study Away also apply to summer study away. If you wish to transfer credits back to Trinity from a summer program, you must submit an Application for Transfer Credit form to the Registrar’s Office prior to departure at the end of the spring term.  The Application for Transfer Credit is available from the Registrar’s Office, an online copy is available above or you can get one from the OIP.  The form must be submitted to the Registrar's Office and, although not required, we would appreciate a copy of this form at the OIP.

Students should know that neither Trinity College nor the OIP oversee non-Trinity programs directly. After selecting a non-Trinity College program, students should work with their advisor, the registrar, and the program provider.

The OIP does not approve or review non-approved summer study abroad programs for credit; this is also done by the Trinity College Registrar’s Office. If there is a particular program that interests you and does not appear as an approved program in the Guidelines for Study Away, we are happy to look at the program with you.  However, you should submit a description of the program along with an Application for Transfer Credit to the Registrar’s Office. After reviewing your program materials and Application for Transfer Credit, the Registrar’s Office will notify you if your selected program is eligible for transfer credit and if there are any restrictions on the particular courses that will award transfer credit.

As always, if you are interested in gaining credit toward your major or minor, you must get documented approval for any course taken abroad by the department chair prior to departure of your program.  This rule for major or minor credit applies for Trinity as well as Non-Trinity Summer Programs!  If you have any questions, please contact the OIP at x 2005.
