PROGRAMS AND AFFILIATES
The Center for Urban and Global Studies (CUGS) at Trinity College serves as an administrative umbrella for six offices/programs and several affiliate offices and programs that previously existed in separation and isolation.  The offices under CUGS are the Office of Community Relations (OCR) directed by Jason Rojas, the Office of Urban Academic Engagement (OUAG), whose Associate Director Elinor Jacobson administers the Community Learning Initiative (CLI), the Office of Internships directed by Anne Lundberg, the Office of International Programs (OIP) whose Acting Director is Lisa Sapolis, the Hartford Studies Project (HSP) headed by Susan Pennybacker, and Trinfo.Café managed by Carlos Espinosa.  The directors and managers of these offices/programs report directly to Xiangming Chen, Dean and Director of CUGS who is assisted by Luiselle Rivera. For more information on the functions and operations of these offices and their close connections to CUGS and its mission, click on their links on the left.

The affiliates of CUGS include the Cities Program under Associate Academic Dean Ron Spencer, the Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement (CSCE) directed by Joe Barber, and the Human Rights Program directed by Sonia Cardenas of the Department of Political Science.  These programs have different teaching, research, and engagement links to the Center and its mission.  For more information on the roles and operations of these programs and their varied connections to CUGS and its mission, click on their links below.  In addition, Henry Luce Professor of Health and Human Rights Laurel Baldwin-Ragaven is affiliated with CUGS during 2007-08, while the McGill Fellow through the International Studies Program will be housed in CUGS in Spring, 2008.  The Scholar Rescue Fund Scholar through Associate Dean Ron Spencer may be housed in CUGS during 2008-09.

CUGS promotes close cooperation among the offices and with the affiliate programs.  While each office, administered by or affiliated with CUGS, has its distinctive objectives and operations, they contribute something specific and complementary to the development and success of an integrated urban-global program that distinguishes Trinity.  By exposing a selected number of first-year students to different courses on urban topics, the Cities Program is expected to stimulate students’ interest in other urban and CLI courses (see elsewhere on this web site) in their second year and beyond.  Promoting Hartford-based learning and research can foster students’ interest in pursuing opportunities at Trinity’s global programs administered by CLI and HSP can foster students’ interest in pursuing study away opportunities at Trinity’s global sites administered by OIP, which can help reintegrate students back into Hartford-based programs.  Working with Office of Community Relations (OCR), and OIP, the Office of Internships, CSCE, and Trinfo.Café can collaborate in identifying and securing fellowship positions, volunteer experience, and internships for Trinity students in both Hartford and international cities.  Shared office locations in two adjacent buildings at 66 Vernon and 70 Vernon, coupled with convenient and frequent face-to-face interactions among the staff, allow all the offices and programs under and affiliated with CUGS to work together to advance the broader collective goals of classroom teaching, experiential learning, scholarly research, and service outreach on Trinity campus, in Greater Hartford, and across the world.
