Hartford Studies Project
COLLECTION

PHOTO ARCHIVE

The Hartford Studies Project curates a 3000-image slide collection on the post-1880 history of Hartford, which is also available for campus use through the Trinity Slide Library. The slide collection can be searched by date, topic, and street names. Our slides are available for research and can be loaned for classroom and other presentations.

These photographs document everyday life and important changes in the city, such as the demolition of Front Street and the riots of the 1960s. Many of the photographs are drawn from the Hartford Times and focus on the city’s twentieth-century history,  while older photographs offer glimpses into nineteenth-century Hartford’s streets, parks and people.

251 of our photographs are now available to Trinity users online, for research and teaching purposes. To view them, click here.

For any further use of these images, request permission from the Hartford Public Library, which holds the rights.

For an example of how these images can be used in classroom presentations, see this PowerPoint presentation on the Hartford riots of the late 1960s, by students in the Fall 2001 American Studies junior seminar. Click on the pictures to navigate through the presentation.
