Cities Data Center
In the Classroom
  • Student teams in Professor Andrew Walsh's Cities 203 class analyze 50 years of data on specific Hartford-area Census tracts.  The teams produce micro-histories of neighborhoods detailing the changes in adult educational attainment, housing, employment, income, ancestry and ethnicity.   
  • Professor Dario Euraque's students, in History 239, used data and GIS software to produce maps of West Indian and Hispanic settlement in Hartford since 1960. 
  • Math Professor Judith Moran's students, in Spring 2004, used countywide data and mapping software to investigate social indicators of adult literacy across the Hartford Region.  
  • Economics students in Dr. Suzanne Gleason's senior seminar relied on data center advice and materials to evaluates the benefits of several investment projects in the Frog Hollow neighborhood.
  • Professor Terje Hoim's students, in Math 107, learned statistics while analyzing 15 years of Hartford crime data.  The students each produced three statistical reports detailing crime tends and developments in Hartford's 17 neighborhoods. 
  • A team of students in Dr. Diane Zannoni's Econometrics seminar used a data compiled by the Center to analyze staffing at the Hartford Police Department against police staffing in 77 other small cities across the country.  The report was presented to the city in June 2004.
  • The Cities Data Center collaborated with Professor Jack Dougherty's class to explore changing perceptions of community with alumni from Bulkeley High School in the city's South End.   
  • Philosophy students in Professor Jessica spector's class on 'Prostitution and Pornography' used 15-years of crime data to analyze and map prostitution arrests across the city. The class also participated in a health seminar at Hartford community Court.
  • In Spring 2004, Dr. Michael Niemann's students explored changing patterns of work and leisure in the 20th Century.  Students produced reports on employment change and the decline of movie theaters in the Hartford area.
  • Cities Center Director Ivan Kuzyk has lectured in over two dozen classes in the last two years, presenting the latest information and data on health, the economy, politics, the criminal justice system, education, the city and the suburbs, and general demographic change.
