2) Co-op/Internship Opportunities for 2008
http://www.rit.edu/%7Egtfsbi/Symp/coopinternational.htm
The organizations on this list offer co-op/internship opportunities that MAY consider applicants that do not hold US citizenship or Permanent Resident (PR) status. However, some of these organizations simply do not provide any eligibility requirements or, if they do, do not mention anything about a requirement for US citizenship or PR status. Thus, I am NOT certain if all of the opportunities listed do, indeed, consider applications from students who do not hold US citizenship or PR status. So, you should check the eligibility criteria provided at the underlined co-op link for each organization to determine if you are, indeed, eligible.

5) Summer Research in Sciences at Rutgers
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, invites applications to our highly successful summer research program, RISE (Research In Science and Engineering) at Rutgers/UMDNJ, http://rise.rutgers.edu. RISE is co-sponsored by our sister institution, The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). Please circulate this announcement to students who
- are graduating in December 2008 or anytime thereafter
- have strong academic credentials
- are considering future PhD programs.
We particularly encourage applications from traditionally underrepresented minorities and from students who are from disadvantaged or first-generation college families, have followed non-traditional trajectories through college, or attend undergraduate institutions that offer only limited opportunities for research.
Here are some features that distinguish RISE from many other summer programs:
-- Exciting Science: Our research spans the biomedical, physical and behavioral sciences, math, and engineering. In the biosciences, we offer an umbrella program, http://lifesci.rutgers.edu/~molbiosci/ , and are home to the Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey. Cutting-edge interdisciplinary opportunities include three IGERT programs: Biointerfaces (www.igert.rutgers.edu), NanoPharmaceutical Science & Engineering, http://igertnanopharma.rutgers.edu/, and Perceptual Sciences, http://perceptualscience.rutgers.edu/. We also offer strong programs in environmental and marine sciences, food and nutritional sciences, and ecology.
-- Choice of Mentor: We welcome each student's input
-- Option for 8 or 10 week experience.
-- Extensive professional enrichment: Training in oral and written presentation skills, GRE preparation, workshops on graduate school admissions (including preparation of a personal statement), networking with guest speakers from industry and academia.
-- Funding: Competitive stipend, free on-campus housing, and travel reimbursement.
-- Record of alumni success: RISE students have won numerous awards at national research conferences and have an excellent record of graduate school placement.
-- Great location: We are only a short train ride from the excitement of New York City and Philadelphia, yet have a safe and green campus with easy access to the mountains and beach. We are at the national center of the pharmaceutical and technology industries, and summer students are often able to arrange future internships.
-- Easy on-line application at http://rise.rutgers.edu. Rolling admission begins at the end of January and is highly competitive. We advise early application.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

11) Summer Program for future physician-scientists
Gateways to the Laboratory Summer Program , sponsored by the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan-Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program in New York City. This ten week program allows freshman and sophomore (class of 2010 or 2011) underrepresented minority and/or disadvantaged students to experience life as a MD-PhD student. The federal NIH definition (which we adhere to) of underrepresented minority (in the sciences) and/or disadvantaged is available on-line: http://grants.nih.gov/training/faq_diversity.htm#a3
The Gateways students experience an exciting summer as they conduct independent research projects in a lab at one of our three institutions, while participating in a number of clinical activities including scrubbing into surgeries. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience, first hand, life as a physician-scientist.
At the end of the summer, the Gateways students give oral, written and poster presentations of their research. Last year, we were able to raise funds to pay for travel and lodging expenses so that each Gateways student could have at least one family member come, as our guest, to New York City in order to attend the final presentations.
The Gateways to the Laboratory Program awards a stipend of $4300 and reimburses the students for their travel expenses. On campus housing is available.
The Gateways to the Laboratory Program started in 1993 as the first summer program to be run by a MD-PhD Program. A number of our alumni are now students at some of the top MD-PhD Programs across the country, including our own Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program. The NIH expressed an interest in using the Gateways Program as a model for other institutions. Recently, our program was featured on the NIH web page as a model program with a notable record of recruitment and retention strategies.
The on-line application will be available at: http://www.med.cornell.edu/mdphd/summerprogram/application.html
The application deadline is February 1, 2008 (as is the deadline for most summer programs). Early completed applications are strongly encouraged.
Please inform your students of this wonderful opportunity. This program is ideal for those students contemplating the combined MD-PhD degree.
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
****Please note, this year, the Gateways to the Laboratory Program is open to underrepresented minority students AND/OR disadvantaged students. We use the federal NIH definition of underrepresented minority and/or disadvantaged:
http://grants.nih.gov/training/faq_diversity.htm#a3
