The features that make Trinity a unique place to prepare for graduate study in the health professions (medical school, veterinary school, dental school, nursing school, etc.) can be found within our curriculum and our community. Health profession schools are looking more and more for students “who have the broadest possible education experience, not just in the sciences, but in the humanities and the arts as well. It is important that students develop broad cultural sensitivity and the ability to appreciate customs and values which may differ from their own…through a wide variety of humanities courses and volunteer work with populations different from the student’s own background.” (Admissions Deans’ Roundtable: Medicine as a Liberal Art, The Advisor, March 2003). Our curriculum features exceptional science courses and facilities coupled with faculty dedicated to undergraduate teaching and scholarly activity. Special programs such as the Health Fellows Program, the Interdisciplinary Science Program, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Summer Science Research Institute allow students to explore scientific research in areas related to the health professions. Additionally, non-science faculty, facilities, and course offerings provide the student with the opportunities to explore and cultivate interest in the arts and humanities.
The community that Trinity embraces is one of diversity and opportunity. With its urban location, Trinity provides students the opportunities for exposure to many different socio-economic and cultural groups through internships, the Community Learning Initiative, and volunteer placements in clinics, hospitals, shelters, and community service facilities. Additionally, Hartford Hospital (a top tertiary care and community health hospital) St. Francis Hospital (named as one of the Top 100 Cardiac Hospitals in the country), Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (the major pediatric health center in Southern New England) and the Institute of Living (an internationally known in-patient psychiatric hospital) are all within a 5 minutes drive of campus and provide students with unparallel exposure to the health professions at all levels of service. The University of Connecticut Medical and Dental Schools are also nearby.
Located at the Institute of Living is the Olin Neurospychiatry Research Center (ONRC), one of the premier functional MRI centers of in the world.
The Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) works closely to assist you in your exploration of career options in the health professions. Services provided students include one-on-one counseling, monthly information seminars, and course advising throughout their four years at Trinity.
