“Unless we remember we cannot understand” – E.M. Forster
Memoir, we are constantly being told, is the new fiction. In fact, the art of shaping one’s life into literature is at least as old as St. Augustine’s Confessions, written around 400 A.D. Giving Voice will explore the project of memoir in its many permutations—as cultural history, as family chronicle, as a mode of self-discovery, as a search for truth. A dozen prominent authors of memoir will gather at Trinity College on March 29-31, 2007, to discuss the art, craft, and implications of their chosen genre and to give readings from their groundbreaking and sometimes best-selling work. All events on the schedule are free and open to the public, but registration by March 26 is required for entrance to panel discussions. Authors will be available to sign books at the fair adjacent to the conference. Please see campus directions for information on travel, accommodations (we have a conference rate at the Holiday Inn Express on Brainard Road--www.hartford-hotel.com) and parking, and contacts for more information about the symposium.
