Trinity Convocation 2008

The incoming class of 2012, with 594 students, arrived Thursday, August 28, triggering the start of Trinity’s 185th academic year. The first-year students saw newly renovated Long Walk and other physical changes to the campus.

The incoming class, which has a full array of orientation activities and events planned before classes get underway, boasts of academic credentials that are unmatched in the history of the College. The Class of 2012 includes 16 Presidential Scholars and 33 international students. Moreover, students of color represent 28 percent of the new class.

On Thursday, August 28, the President’s Convocation, in which President James F. Jones, Jr., delivered a speech entitled, "On These Trees And Otherwise," kicked off the first-year orientation.

First-year students lined up on the Long Walk esplanade for the processional.

Flagbearers Shayla Campbell '12 and Jonathan Lee '12 led the processional.

Students walked around the Luther-Roosevelt Long Walk Inscription, which commemorates President Theodore Roosevelt's 1918 visit to the College.

Director of Special Academic Projects J. Ronald Spencer joined the Trinity community in welcoming the Class of 2012.

Professors, including Charles A. Dana Professor of History Joan Hedrick, welcomed the Class of 2012.

The Class of 2012 proceeded through Fuller Arch at Northam Towers to the Quadrangle.

Parents, faculty, staff, and student leaders sat on four sides of the first-year class to offer support as the class begins its Trinity years.

The Trinity College Chapel Singers sang the Alma Mater, 'Neath the Elms.

Jared D. Paletti '09, Co-Chair of the Trinity College Student Alumni Ambassador Program, and James F. Jones, Jr., President and Trinity College Professor in the Humanities, with the Clarke Lemon Squeezer.

Rena Fraden, Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs and G. Keith Funston Professor of English and American Studies, welcomed the Class of 2012. 

Nathan A. Kirschbaum '09, President of the Student Government Associated, greeted the Class of 2012.

Cheryl Greenberg, Secretary of the Faculty and Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of History, welcomed the Class of 2012.

David G. Allen '09, Co-Chair of the Trinity College Student Alumni Ambassador Program, welcomed the Class of 2012.

President Jones delivered his speech, "On These Trees And Otherwise."

The ceremony concluded with a lemonade social and self-guided tours of the newly restored Long Walk buildings.
