President's Letter to the Class of 2008

3/13/08 Update in regards to Commencement:
The Long Walk Restoration and Renovation is on schedule to be completed this coming August. The construction plan continues to call for the present fencing and temporary walkway running along the east and west sides of the Seabury and Jarvis Buildings to remain in place through the completion of the project including through Commencement. The tradition of the Commencement ceremony under the trees will continue. A portion of the fence near the Fuller Arch at Northam Towers will be moved temporarily to allow the Class of 2008 to process over the Roosevelt Inscription on Commencement Day.  We are delighted that the Class of 2008 will have the opportunity to participate in this tradition especially during the final months of such an historic and unique project.

The construction fencing, dirt piles, and pathways on the Quad's grassy area closest to the Chapel as well as the gravel pathway and “orange” snow fencing running through the Quad and soccer field to Vernon Street will be removed in advance of Commencement.  The new sidewalk pavers in front of the Cook/Goodwin, Chapel, and Downes/Williams are scheduled to be completed by Commencement Weekend as well.

3/7/08 Update:
Beginning March 17 and through March 23, there will be no pedestrian access to the Long Walk from either Downes Memorial Arch or Cook/Hamlin Arch. During this Spring Break week, pedestrian traffic will be redirected to either Summit Street or the Lower Long Walk. After Spring Break, a gravel pathway will be available and there will be access to the Long Walk through those two arches. As illustrated in the attached drawings (pdf), the work, which will commence on March 17 and continue through May 16 in order to be ready for Commencement, will include installing drainage lines, gravel and the final finish pavers. The final paver work will be done in stages as weather allows. Signs will be posted to re-direct pedestrians for safety reasons while these areas are closed.

11/7/07 Update:

On November 12th, 2007 construction will begin from the Main Quad to the Lower Long Walk. A long trench will be dug to assist in drainage near the Jarvis/Seabury Project. Pedestrian traffic will be interrupted because of this construction project and two areas need to be cleared of vehicles so that construction vehicles can enter the Hansen area including the area in front of 94 Vernon Street and the fence line in the Hansen lot. The duration of this work will be from November 12, 2007 to approximately May 1, 2008.
