Press Release

Trinity Recognized for Fire Prevention Safety

College Awarded for Outstanding Achievement in Accident Control

Hartford, Conn. - Trinity College was recognized by The Hartford for its “Commitment to Loss Prevention,” specifically for the fire protection and prevention measures the institution has taken over the last year, from July 1, 2008 – July 1, 2009.

Trinity was recognized for their fire preventative steps based on their outstanding record, the support of the administration, and the notable work of the staff.

“This is quite an honor for the College,” Steve Petrolati, Executive Loss Control Consultant of The Hartford Financial Services Group, said.  “This is a very proactive school, and this award is a credit to the school and the hard work of this staff.”

Karen Misbach, Environmental Health & Safety Manager and Sustainability Coordinator at Trinity, and Mick Dumas, Fire Systems Specialist, were on hand to receive the award from Petrolati, alongside Rick Poirier of RC Knox & Co, the College’s insurance agent.

“It’s rewarding that The Hartford chose Trinity’s Environmental Health & Safety Department among all of the other organizations that they represent,” Dumas said after receiving the award.

In an effort to maintain the highest level of fire protection in its buildings, Trinity is continually re-evaluating the life safety systems. According to Dumas, the department has prioritized a list of buildings that require attention, with the dormitories taking highest priority.  Last year, Trinity upgraded the fire alarm system in four dorms, and this summer, the department is in the process of upgrading the final dorm before advancing on to academic buildings.

Earlier this year, Trinity was given an “A” for campus safety preparedness by Reader’s Digest, and ranked 23rd out of the 125 institutions surveyed.  The report examined the numerous safety threats faced by college students today while considering the size and location of each school.  Some of the many safety measures taken by Trinity include:

• All of the dorms have smoke detectors and sprinkler systems on each floor.
• 100 percent of the students who live on campus, live in dorms that have rooms with self-locking doors.
• The College has a staff of 39 campus safety professionals. The officers are “on call” 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
• Cameras monitor several of the parking lots.
• Patrons must show an ID to enter the library.
• 90 percent of the campus is protected by blue light phones, which allow students to call campus security.
• The College’s freshman orientation program covers such topics as binge drinking, drug use and rape.
• Trinity has an emergency response plan and a mass emergency notification system that will inform students, faculty, staff and parents in the event of an emergency.
• 100 percent of the students living in dorms have peepholes so they can see into the hallways.
