Society Organized Against Racism Celebrated at Trinity College

What: The Society Organized Against Racism (SOAR) celebrates their 25th Anniversary Dinner and Conference at Trinity College, “Who We Are, Where We Are, and What Time It Is: Defining Struggle in the Age of Obama.”  The program includes meals, dance performances, a concert, lectures, workshops, and a fashion show.  

The conference is oriented toward college-age students.  Sessions are open to the public, but meals are restricted.  Faculty, staff, and students who wish to attend as Trinity representatives can attend both sessions and meals free of charge.  To register, e-mail

Background and Schedule:
The Society Organized Against Racism (SOAR) is a consortium of New England colleges and universities dedicated to sharing resources and insights toward eliminating racism in higher education. SOAR is convinced that educating and energizing our students while engaging stakeholders can enhance diversity and achieve equity on our campuses.

Friday, March 27th

5-8 p.m. SOAR 25th Anniversary Dinner in Faculty Dining Room
Opening greetings by Fred Alford, Trinity Dean of Students; Greetings by Jamele Adams, Brandeis Assistant Dean of Students, representing SOAR; Recognition of SOAR Founders; brief address by the Rev. Dr. Darryl Smaw, Swarthmore Associate Dean of Multicultural Affairs, and SOAR founder.

An Intergenerational Dialogue featuring Charles McDew, a founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Charles Butch Lewis, formerly an organizer of the Black Panther Party in Hartford, and Prof. Gloria Rodriguez, formerly a member of the Young Lords Party.  Zee Santiago, Trinity ’09, will serve as the panel facilitator.  McCook Auditorium.
