What: Reverend Gary Dorrien, Reinhold Niebuhr Professor of Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary and Professor of Religion at Columbia University, will be giving a lecture entitled, “Realism in Question: Politics, Theology, and the Legacy of Reinhold Niebuhr.” Rev. Dorrien, the Paul E. Raether Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence at Trinity, has a long record of involvement in social justice and anti-war organizations. The talk is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

Background: Gary Dorrien is the Reinhold Niebuhr Professor of Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary and Professor of Religion at Columbia University. An Episcopal priest, he was previously the Parfet Distinguished Professor at Kalamazoo College. Rev. Dorrien’s recent book, Imperial Designs, grew out of his extensive lecturing against the United States’ invasion and occupation of Iraq. His major work, Social Ethics in the Making, was published by Blackwell in November 2008, and he is currently completing a book entitled Economy, Difference, and Empire.
