How do I appeal my room rating?
The deadline for appeals is March 28th. SGA will make their decisions and the letters will be sent to campus boxes. Notification date to be determined.
Who decides the room ratings?
The SGA – Housing Committee.
Is The Fred exempt from this year’s ratings?
No. Residents of The Fred will have their ratings included in their history the same as every other resident on campus.
What if I feel my rating was unfair last year?
You cannot appeal the ratings from previous years. You can only appeal the current year. Unfortunately it is too late to change your history.
How does my lottery number get assigned to me?
Your lottery number is based on your housing history at Trinity College. The lottery numbers also reflect what class year you are in.
What if I lived off campus for a year?
For the 2008 Lottery only, students that lived off-campus for the 2007-2008 year will receive an "F" rating. Your lottery number will also be based upon your prior housing history and your class year. Multicultural houses are not rated.
What if I am a returning student?
If you have not been here for an entire year, a lottery number will not be automatically generated. However, your history will be manually calculated and lottery number will be assigned based on your overall rating and the class year.
What if I don’t think my lottery number is fair?
The opportunity to appeal room ratings is offered. Lottery numbers are based on the room ratings. Lottery numbers CANNOT be appealed. If you believe the number is incorrect, we can calculate manually and check to see if there was an error in your particular history. This does take some time. Please be patient and we will get back to you.

What do I do when I get to the lottery?
Your first stop is the registration table. Present your ID and after we confirm you are eligible to participate, you will be directed to the next station. There are many Campus Life staff persons at the lottery prepared to answer your questions and respond to your concerns.
Why would I be unable to participate?
There are many people who have already been assigned a room. For example: PRIDE leaders, RAs, students with medical reasons….
Also, those on financial hold, students who have not registered for fall classes, students who have not had their meningitis shot and anyone who has applied to study abroad during the fall semester will not participate in the lottery.
Why don’t I have a lottery number?
- Do you have a financial hold on your account? If so, you must speak with someone in Student Accounts.
- Did you register for classes? If not, you must do so prior to the lottery or you may not participate.
- Did you apply to study abroad for the fall? If you did and you have decided not to go, you must follow up with the International Studies Office. You will not receive your lottery number until you have formally informed them that you are withdrawing from studying abroad. The deadline to do this is April 25th.
- Have you already received a housing assignment?
If I am reinstated will I be penalized or dropped to the bottom?
No. Your number was generated but just withdrawn until you were cleared to participate. It is the same number that would have been posted regardless of the hold.
If I am planning on choosing a double or triple, whose lottery number is used?
After you have registered at the lottery you and your roommates will proceed to the lottery number averaging table. There, your numbers will be averaged and that number is the one you will use.
What if I am a junior and my roommate is a senior? Which day do we attend the Lottery?
Average your lottery numbers. If the average falls within the senior range come on May 1st. If the average number is above the last senior number, you will select on Friday with the Junior and Sophomore classes.
What if I don’t know anyone to room with and there are no singles available?
There will be others in your same situation. You can speak to them and see if you would like to live together, or opt to be placed in summer placement.
What is summer placement?
Summer placement will occur after May 31st. At that time we will have an accurate list of vacancies and will be able to offer you options. Be forewarned, there is no guarantee what rooms will open up after May 1st. After the housing lottery has been held, we will not be able to guarantee on campus housing.
What if my roommates and I don’t like the options that are left when our lottery number is called?
You can request to go on the waiting list and be part of summer placement. However, bear in mind that if you choose to sit out the housing lottery in the hopes that something more appealing will open, you will not be guaranteed on campus housing. It is suggested that if there are some spaces available you select them and be placed on the waiting list. If a space opens up that is more appealing to you we can switch your assignments, but in the meantime you will have a room reserved for you.
How do I qualify for a single based on medical need?
You must submit an application along with documentation from your physician. Submit the application and documents to the Health Center, Attention: Martha Burke. She will pass on her recommendations to the Office of Campus Life and you will be assigned accordingly. The deadline for medical assignments is March 30th. However, some circumstances may warrant an extension.
I will be abroad in the fall, how does this affect my housing?
Students who are going abroad in the fall will have a lottery number generated in April. This lottery number will be used when placement is done in January. In September, the Students who are abroad will be notified and asked to submit their housing preferences. Please make sure the International Studies office has your email address abroad. Please do not show up at the lottery unless you are a proxy for someone who is currently abroad or for someone who is unable to attend.
I am a proxy for someone or for several someones. What do I do?
Make sure you know their lottery number and please be sure you have a clear understanding of their housing preferences. Come to the lottery at the appointed time and proceed to the Proxy station. There, the lottery number of the person you are choosing for will be confirmed and you will be asked to move ahead to the next station.
What if I oversleep or forget to come to the housing lottery?
Your name will be added to the Summer Placement list with the others who are on the wait list. There is no guarantee you will get a room on campus or one that is reflected by your lottery number. If you do miss the lottery and want to live on campus, it is YOUR responsibility to notify the Campus Life office. Otherwise your name will be dropped from the housing list.
What if I am thinking of living off campus but not sure yet?
If you choose to withdraw from housing after selecting a room at the housing lottery, the deadline to withdraw without financial penalty is May 23rd.
§ If you withdraw from housing between May 23rd and June 30th the penalty is $500.
§ If you withdraw from housing between July 1st and July 31st, the penalty is $750.
§ After July 31st, any student who withdraws from housing, the penalty is $1000.
Students who wish to apply to live off campus for the 2008-2009 year must notify the Office of Campus Life in writing before April 1st. “Application to Live Off Campus” forms are available online.
If you do withdraw from housing after selecting a room, your withdrawal must be in writing. An email will be sufficient.
