Off-Campus Resources

General Overview:

Trinity College strives to be a residential college and currently houses approximately 92% of matriculated students in college owned and operated housing. Students are allowed to petition to live off-cempus on a space-available basis. Preference is given by class year seniority and first-years are not allowed to live off-campups unless commuting from home. Trinity cannot be involved in making off-campus housing arrangements for students who are interested, instead we will try to provide you with helpful information and resources in order for everyone to live in the place of their own choosing. On this site, we maintain a list of rental resources and information for those considering living off-campus. We encourage you to read the FAQs first as there is very important information conveyed there to you to consider.

Susan Salisbury, Associate Director for Housing and Residential Life

FAQ:

(Q) Does it cost more to live off-campus?
(A) Not necessarily. After much research we have found plenty of options that cost less and some that cost more. It is important to consider all the costs and not just rent when making a decision. Please refer to the attached Rental Property Cost Comparison to begin thinking about the costs involved.

(Q) Will my financial aid be affected if I live off-campus?
(A) It is expected that all financial aid will be calculated the same regardless of your housing status. However, since student's financial aid packages can vary dramatically, it is suggested that you contact the Office of Financial Aid directly to discuss your personal situation.

(Q) If I am studying away from the Hartford campus for part of the year, will I be able to share a lease with someone?
(A) You certainly may, however you must make these arrangements yourself.

(Q) What types of properties are available?
(A) The majority of the off-campus spaces listed are small houses immediately adjacent to campus. Places like Crescent Street and Allen Place are only a few steps away. There are other properties in Hartford listed as well because many students have said that there are other neighborhoods that are fun to live in and are close enough for an easy commute.

(Q) What do I need to do to get permission from the college to live off-campus?
(A) Each year, on a first come first served basis, the college will allow a limited number of students to live off-campus.  At the bottom of the page there is a link to a "Request to Life Off-Campus Form." Please make sure that you tell us that you will be living off campus by completing this form by early March (exact date is contained in the Housing Lottery Instructions). When you do this it will help us let others know (who want to live on campus) that there will be space for them.

(Q) If I live off-campus, how will that affect my lottery number in future years?
(A) Under the current system the way that lottery numbers are calculated is to average the room ratings for each room you occupied in campus housing. When students take a period off, study away from campus or live off-campus there is no room rating given. Therefore, there is no penalty for living off-campus.

Trinity College cannot endorse any particular realtor or property and cannot vouch for the the quality of the following listings. Students should exercise care in assessing the quality of the properties and arrangements before signing a lease. The most current listings are at the top of each category and landlords/property managers are asked to keep us informed when listings are no longer avaialble.
