Trinity College

July

Over two steamy days in July, Trinity Athletic Director Rick Hazelton took community leaders on tours of the CSC site. All were impressed with the tremendous progress that has been made and expressed excitement as work on the facility moves ahead.

The big news is that workers are making strides on the rink itself. Preparing the ground under the rink is a complex process that involves two sets of pipes with a layer of insulation in between. The lower set actually heats the ground under the rink, which, if allowed to freeze, would expand and buckle, eventually ruining the foundation of the building. These pipes are buried in carefully compacted dirt under a layer of insulation. A second set of pipes comes next. This set will carry an aqueous solution that, cooled well below freezing, will turn water into a rink. Workers will be installing the cooling pipes - 60,000 feet or more than 11 miles of them - soon. Once they are in place, the concrete slab will be poured.

Meanwhile, finish work is well under way. Almost all the rooms have been walled in and many have sheet rock up and are ready for paint, lighting fixtures, ceiling tiles, and floor treatments.

Pink insulation has been laid over the rink area. The next step will be to install the cooling pipes.

Men's Hockey Head Coach John Dunham stands with one of the large spools of piping that will carry the coolant to freeze the ice.

The main cooling pipes run across the rink area. Smaller piping, over 11 miles of it, will run off these larger pipes.

At the north west corner of the rink, workers are almost finished laying insulation. Notice the carefully graded ground underneath.
