There are currently over 18 projects in which Community Service and Civic Engagement volunteers are involved. They include: AIDS Project, Best Buddies, Betances School Tutoring, Burns School Tutoring, Center City Churches, English as a Second Language, Family Life Ministry, Habitat for Humanity, Immaculate Conception, Interval House, Kennelly School Tutoring, Lewis Fox Middle School Tutoring, Scholars Club, St. Elizabeth’s Shelter, Trinity Camp for Kids, Youth Emergency Shelter, Youth Under Severe Stress. If you do not see a project, which interests you, then feel free to create your own.
Annual Community Events Staff (ACES)
The Annual Community Events Staff, ACES, is dedicated to doing just that. Each year, ACES, a group of about 20 students, works to put together well-known, annual events such as Halloween on Vernon Street, the Spring Auction, Souper Bowl, Sponsor a Snowman, and Do-It-Day. These mostly one-time projects take long term planning. Each year ACES brainstorms to add new events as well.
Best Buddies
Best Buddies provides an opportunity for college student to be in a one-to-one friendship with individuals who have intellectual disabilities. The purpose is to increase knowledge of mental disabilities and to ensure friendship for all participants.
The Connecticut Public Interest Research Group (ConnPIRG)
ConnPIRG is a student-directed, statewide organization that focuses its efforts on environmental preservation, consumer protection, and student rights. Since Trinity students established a ConnPIRG chapter on campus twelve years ago, ConnPIRG has been a vehicle through which students have gained “hands on” experience in investigative research, lobbying, organizing and media work. ConnPIRG students have been responsible for winning such legislation as the “lemon law”, a household hazardous waste bill, and a bill, which gives students two (2) seats on the Connecticut Loan Foundation so that students can have a voice on such issues as financial aid. Membership is open to any interested student.
F.A.C.E.S. (Friends Active in Civic Engagement and Service)
F.A.C.E.S. is a student – led organization whose mission is to build bridges of friendship, growth, and education between Trinity College and Hartford. F.A.C.E.S. believes that students have the power to transform their idealism, energy, and concern into meaningful partnerships with the residents of Hartford. Our purpose, therefore, is to provide members of the Trinity community and the people of Hartford channels for meaningful interaction in order to address and to learn about community issues and challenges.
Green Campus
Green Campus is a student-led organization whose mission is to increase campus awareness of global environmental issues at Trinity College. As an institution, Trinity College consumes large amounts of food, resources and energy, as well as generates a variety of waste and pollutants. Green Campus strives to make Trinity College a better place, to reduce our negative environmental impact and operate in a manner that is more ecologically sound.
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity has been established to assist in working with local affiliates in order to demonstrate a commitment to love and community. By working in cooperation with people in need to create a better human habitat in which to live and work and to provide an opportunity to work in cooperation with other agencies and groups, which have a kindred purpose.
Praxis
Praxis is a residence-based community service program established by and for students with the purpose of creating an environment that actively promotes and engages students in community involvement and building with the residence hall, on campus and with the Hartford community.
Trinity College Lions Club
The purpose of this organization shall be to create and foster a spirit of understanding among people of the College and surrounding Hartford community. To do this, the club promotes the principles of good government and good citizenship, and takes an active interest in the civic, cultural, social, and moral welfare of the community. It also works to unite the members in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship, and mutual understanding. They provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest, provided however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members. The club encourages service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in education, service, and private endeavors. They also contribute monetarily to the charitable organizations supported by the International Association of Lions Clubs. Lastly, they perform service for sensory-impaired youth and elderly, in the tradition of the International Association of Lions Clubs.
